The Prescott Badgers were able to wake up from an early hibernation to beat the Bradshaw Mountain Bears 28-7 in Prescott Valley.

The Bears came into this one after winning their first game 14-6 over Tuba City last Thursday. The Badgers were coming off a 20-0 road win at Shadow Mountain.

The game was sloppy early for Prescott as they were “out of sync” and surprisingly being shutout for the entire first half.

Meanwhile, the Bears came out with a lot of energy and were able to score on their second possession when Morgan Gosik caught a 20 yard pass from quarterback Lucy Nache for what would turn out to be the only score of the first half. Kylie Harms added the extra point and Bradshaw Mountain led 7-0 with 7:37 in the first quarter.

Prescott did finally get into the red zone towards the end of the second quarter but a 28 yard field goal attempt just missed wide right.

The Badgers finally got the goose egg off the board on the first play of the fourth quarter capping off a 63 yard drive when quarterback Rianna Aguilar took the ball around the right end and extended it out over the goal line, a split second before the defender grabbed her flag. Delainey Courtney added the extra point and the game was knotted at 7.

Addalyn Brandon stepped in front of the Bradshaw receiver picking off the pass for a 41 yard pick-six and just like that the Badgers led 14-7. Brandon said, “I think we were all just a little tense because we could not get anything to work. Once we got the first touchdown we settled in.” About the game winning pick-six, “I just followed the girl and the ball came. I caught it and ran. It was great. I felt it changed the mood of the game and I was happy about it.”

The Bears went four and out and Prescott wasted no time scoring again when Aguilar connected with Marley VanWormer in stride for a 35 yard touchdown pass play and a 21-7 lead.

The Bears were the victim of a defensive back jumping the route for yet another score. Maggie Maneely’s 40 yard pick-six with just under five minutes left, put the exclamation point on the fourth quarter surge and victory in the very first meeting between the two rivalry schools in flag football.

Maneely said, “We were finally able to get some momentum and started playing good. Then we started scoring and scoring again.” About her pick-six, “The girl I was covering kept running an out route and I was able to step in front her and grab it and go.”

Delainey Courtney had a busy night with 8 tackles along with Allana Gilray who had 6, and Daria Young with 5.

Bradshaw Mountain after picking up their first win over Tuba City falls to (1-4). Prescott improves to (5-0) and will host Deer Valley tonight at 6 pm.
