The Badgers celebrated senior night in the Badger Dome with a 68-39 win over the Mingus Marauders. Five of the six seniors started the game for Prescott, a decision coach Travis Stedman explained after the game. “We just went by how many years they have been in the program. Unfortunately with six seniors, one had to sit at the beginning, but we got him in the first quarter. We could have not picked a better senior night. Everybody contributed. These seniors were freshmen when I started here, so it is really nice to see them progress, and send them off in this fashion.”
It took a few minutes for the Badgers, with the unusual starting lineup, to get things going. Mingus took advantage early in the game to keep it close, but Prescott, behind seniors Jason Parent and Jonas Carman, opened up a 19-13 lead after one.
Prescott turned things up defensively, dominating the second quarter to lead 42-21 at the half. The Badgers outscored the Marauders in every quarter, increased their lead by six in the third and two more in the fourth. Jonas Carman dropped in five three pointers to finish with 18. Uriah Tenette came off the bench to score 10.
Leading scorer, and senior Jason Parent said in regards to senior night. “It’s been a lot of fun being here, and I am proud of how we as a team have become one the best teams in the region. Looking forward to having one more home game in the playoffs.” Parent finished the night with a game high 24 points, collecting 6 rebounds, and dishing out 6 assists. Zane Gaul came off the bench to pull down 10 rebounds.
Coach Stedman added, “I really don’t see this as our last home game.” Ranked #11 in this week’s AIA Division 4 poll, it is highly likely we will get to see the Badgers at home for one more game.
The win puts the Badgers in a good position to share, or even win the Grand Canyon Region title. First and foremost, Prescott needs to win at Flagstaff on Friday night. Then If Flagstaff were to beat Coconino, the Badgers would win it outright. If Coconino beats Flagstaff, then the titled would be shared between the Badgers and Coconino.

The Flagstaff Eagles snapped a three game losing streak to the Prescott Badgers with a 4-2 win at Bill Shepard Field. Cool and cloudy conditions prevailed as two of the top teams in Division 4 battled it out for the Grand Canyon Region crown.
The game was physical from the start, as both teams worked very hard to make a statement. The Eagles put a lot of pressure on goal keeper Charlotte Osbourn, who had only given up 4 goals in 11 games. Flagstaff was able to jump on top with on a goal by Davy Mokelke with 24:34 left in the first half. The Eagles kept the intensity on the Badgers, scoring a second goal just two and a half minutes later by Ciara Garcia.
Trailing 2-0, the Badgers responded with pressure of their own, but Eagles goal keeper Lianna Albert and her defensive help kept Prescott of the board. Flagstaff held a 7-3 shots on goal advantage at the break.
Nicole Raiss had a golden opportunity to score, but kicked a rocket that took off and went sailing just above the net. Prescott nearly scored twice in the next sixty seconds, but Albert’s saves kept the score at 2-0.
After nearly four minutes in Flagstaff’s end of the field, the Eagles added another goal on a breakaway goal by Davy Mokelke, her second of the game.
It looked like the Badgers were going to cut the deficit, when Kari Kasun had a breakaway shot, but an amazing save by Albert, kept the game at 3-0.
Nicole Raiss was finally able to get the zero off the board, making an aggressive move, forcing Albert to come up get the ball. Raiss kicked the ball just past Albert and into the net, making the score 3-1 with 24:29 remaining.
Brisa Arangure boosted the lead back to two, with her goal with 10:52 left, to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Mayrin Soto scored the fourth goal for the Eagles with 7:38 left. Prescott worked and worked to get closer, but you have to credit Flagstaff’s defense down the stretch for the win.
Despite the loss, the Badgers are in position to host a first round playoff game. Prescott coach Paul Campuzano said, “As much as we would have liked to have won this game, and the region, ultimately that is not our goal.” In regards to his teams performance, the coach said, “We started real slow, like we did in our first game gave up two goals and had to come back. When you are outworked in the first half by a very good time like Flag, it is very hard to work your way back. It’s a good time to lose and a good time to reevaluate. We’re going to be ok and ready for state. The girls have a completely different mindset, I am proud of the way we came back, but congratulations to them.”
The game was very physical from the start and seemed to get more so as the game went on. A number of girls went down from collisions, most were able to come back in to play. Campuzano added, “You saw what the ref allowed to go on. It is really questionable of how you can let a team of girls go at it like that, including what my girls were giving, and what they were receiving, it makes for an ugly game, but it is what it is, and congratulations to them.”
The latest AIA Division 4 rankings dropped the Badgers from #3 to #4 with the loss, and Flagstaff moved up from #2 to #1. Despite winning, Notre Dame Prep fell to #2, and Youngker is #3.
The Badgers will play their final regular season contest versus rival Bradshaw Mountain on Monday, at 5 pm in Prescott Valley.
