Attention all hikers and outdoor enthusiasts:
Recent incidents have highlighted the dangers of hiking in extreme heat. Crews from Engine 74 recently assisted a patient and their pet suffering from heat-related issues while hiking in the Watson Lake area. Additionally, Engines 73 and 75 responded to multiple calls involving heat exhaustion.
To ensure your safety and the safety of your pets, please follow these guidelines when hiking in hot weather:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your hike. Carry extra water for yourself and your pets.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. A hat and sunglasses can provide additional protection from the sun.
- Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply it every two hours.
- Plan Ahead: Check the weather forecast and trail conditions. Avoid hiking during peak heat hours (usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.).
- Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. If you or someone with you experiences these symptoms, seek shade, rest, and hydrate immediately.
- Take Breaks: Find shaded areas to rest and cool down periodically.
- Never Leave Pets Behind: Pets are susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Ensure they have access to water and are not overexerted.
Your safety is our priority. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your outdoor adventures while minimizing the risk of heat-related emergencies.
Stay safe and happy hiking!
