CAFMA Deploys New Life-Saving Technology: LUCAS Devices Boost Cardiac Arrest Survival Rates

The Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) has introduced a powerful new tool in its emergency medical services arsenal—LUCAS Devices, mechanical chest compression systems that are already making a life-saving difference in the community.

Designed to deliver continuous, high-quality chest compressions during cardiac arrest, LUCAS Devices improve both the consistency and depth of compressions, leading to better patient outcomes. Since deploying the devices across the Fire Authority, CAFMA has seen a 20% increase in Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC)—a critical milestone indicating the heart has restarted after cardiac arrest.

“These devices do not replace our personnel—they are here to strengthen what we do,” said Doug Niemynski, CAFMA EMS Chief. “They allow our firefighters to deliver uninterrupted CPR, especially in challenging environments like the back of a moving ambulance, where quality manual compressions can be difficult.”

CAFMA’s EMS Division will evaluate outcomes and performance data to ensure continued effectiveness. One recent call highlights the device’s impact: A woman in her 70s went into sudden cardiac arrest. Firefighters quickly deployed the device on scene, delivering consistent, high-quality compressions. Thanks to rapid intervention and uninterrupted care, she is now making a full recovery.

To meet community needs in a fiscally responsible manner, CAFMA collaborated with the manufacturer to purchase refurbished units—allowing for the broad deployment of this life- saving technology without compromising quality.

“This is an investment in improved outcomes and safer practices for both our patients and our responders,” said Interim Fire Chief John Feddema. “Thank you to our EMS Division for their ongoing commitment to researching and implementing progressive tools that enhance patient care in our community.”

CAFMA remains dedicated to innovation that elevates service delivery and saves lives throughout the Quad Cities region.
