The Prescott Badgers lost a nail biter to the Mingus Marauders 49-46 in the Badger Dome, snapping a 12 game win streak over the Marauders dating back to January 2019. The loss also drops them two games back of first place Coconino in the Grand Canyon Region.
The game was close throughout with the both teams holding a five point lead at one time. Prescott, ranked #23 in the latest 4A polls drilled 15 three pointers in their win over Lee Williams on Friday but were crickets beyond the arc last night.
Mingus, ranked #22, came in looking to extend their nine game winning streak. The Marauders jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Badgers responded with 9 in a row to lead 9-5. Mingus then went on a 7-2 run to lead 12-11 after one quarter.
Caden Lozen got the fans excited with a slam dunk giving the Badgers a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter, but it was a defensive battle for the remainder of the quarter with Prescott leading 20-19 at the break.

The offenses came alive in the third quarter in what would continue the back and forth contest as the teams exchanged leads. An old fashioned three point play by Drew Jolley equaled the Badgers largest lead of 5 at 38-33. Mingus once again came back trimming the Prescott lead to just one at 38-37 heading into the final eight minutes.
The Marauders went on top 39-38, but Prescott responded by scoring the next six to lead 44-40 with three plus minutes remaining. The momentum had shifted back to the Badgers and it appeared that they had the potential to pull away, but that was not the case.
Mingus tied the game at 46 on a three point basket by Ricky Villalobos with 1:20 left. After Prescott missed a shot, the Marauders were scrambling to score as the shot clock was about to expire. The Badgers got called for a foul on the loose ball with and a technical foul on Prescott quickly followed. The result was the Marauders made one of two free throws, but more importantly had the ball again with a new shot clock and 43 seconds remaining.
Prescott fouled with 17 seconds left and Ethan Baird made the two free throws. The Badgers, trailing by three at this point desperately needed that first three point basket, but two contested attempts were tipped and failed as time ran out.
The Badgers fall to (4-2) in the Grand Canyon Region, (8-11) overall, will host the Mohave Thunderbirds in the Badger Dome on Friday at 7pm. Mingus (4-1), (16-4), will travel to play Coconino tonight at 7pm.
