Bella Abt scored 16 and Lilly James had 12 to lead the Prescott Lady Badgers to a big 46-40 win over the Flagstaff Lady Eagles in the Badger Dome. The loss by Flagstaff was their first in Grand Canyon Region play since January 10, 2017, and brought to an end the 103 game winning streak in the region.
The home crowd was abuzz for this much anticipated matchup between these two teams knowing what was at stake. The winner would get the inside track to a region title, playoff seeding implications, and of course extending or snapping one of the most impressive streaks in state history.
Coming into the game, Flagstaff’s region win streak began after a loss on January 10, 2017 to Coconino. The Lady Eagles had beaten Prescott 17 straight games going back to February 19, 2016, when the Lady Badgers beat Flagstaff 43-21 in a quarterfinal playoff game.
Addie Prisciandaro said, “We had been looking forward to this game since last year. We had come close but needed to win to give us a shot at the region title. They are such a good team and they do not give you anything. You have to earn it.”
Prisciandaro, who was held to a season low 7 points was the target of double and even triple teams throughout the game that did affect her scoring ability, but she was more than happy to pass the ball to her teammates. “Whatever I have to do to help my team win, I will.”

Prescott jumped on top 4-0 as Flagstaff was slow at getting their offense going. The game was tied at six before the Lady Badgers went on a mini run with baskets from Bella Abt and Bentlee Crockett to take a six point lead after one quarter. Crockett in fact led the Lady Badgers scoring in the opening quarter with 6.
Prescott pushed the lead to 11 at 20-9 on a three pointer by Abt. The two teams played it pretty even the reminder of the second quarter as Prescott went to the locker room with a 28-18 lead.
Flagstaff came out as a new team and battled back taking their first lead of the game 34-33 with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter.

Lilly James drove through the defense for a layup and Prescott led 35-34 as the quarter came to an end.
Flagstaff led 40-38 with five minutes left on a basket by Aubrey Edgewater. That would be the last time the Lady Eagles would score. James got an open look again and responded with a three point basket to give Prescott the lead 41-40, and another drive for a layup for a 43-40 Lady Badger lead with two minutes left.
Flagstaff was still so close but could not get any shots to fall. Both teams continued to use a lot of energy on the defensive end. Free throws down the stretch extended near the end and the Lady Badgers had accomplished one of their goals this season.
Flagstaff Coach Tyrone Johnson said, “I give a lot of credit to Prescott tonight. They came out and knew exactly what they were doing for m the start. They play very hard. We missed some shots that we normally make but after tonight we will go back to the drawing board and get ready for the next one.”
Prescott (4-0), and (16-3), will travel to Kingman on Friday to play Lee Williams while Flagstaff (3-1), (12-4), will travel further down the road to play Mesquite. These teams will face each other again on February 6 at Flagstaff.
