The Prescott Badgers trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but were able to overcome that with a big second half in a 67-52 win at Bradshaw Mountain.

The student sections were amped up and ready from the start, along with the Bears band but for the players it was a slow start, with only a basket by each squad nearly three minutes in. Things began picking up midway through the quarter as the game see-sawed back and forth with the Bears up by three after the first quarter.

The Bradshaw Mountain lead slowly grew to 20-11 as the Badgers went through a short stretch of turnovers. Prescott trailed 26-18 late in the second quarter but scrapped their way back close the deficit to 30-25 at the half.

In the third quarter, when Caden Lozen grabbed a rebound for a put back, the Badgers had climbed all the way back to lead 31-30. Bradshaw found a pair of quick baskets to regain the lead at 36-33. The teams would exchange baskets but the Badgers got two in a row to lead 48-44 after three quarters.

Prescott came out and pretty much owned the final quarter as they out-hustled the Bears down the stretch and took advantage of opportunities resulting in growing their lead.
It was a physical game that you would expect to see between these two rivals. There were 36 fouls called and the teams combined for 46 free throws between them, but both struggled, knocking down just 54%.

The Badgers had a balanced scoring attack with five players reaching double figures. Jake Diener and Pedro Jimenez led Prescott in scoring with 12 each, while Jack Golleher had 11. Caden Lozen and Drew Jolley each had 10.
Jimenez had a big fourth quarter with 7 of his 12 points said, “I think it was all about the hard work and heart. We knew it was going to be a tough game over here. We started off slow and then we were able to figure it out.”
Lozen said, “We came out in the second half with new energy and were able to take their crowd out of it some. Our focus was playing as a team and moving the ball to get the best shots.”
Golleher said, “It is a rivalry and we were excited to get at it. Our goal is to win the Grand Canyon Region and despite the loss at Coconino this was a big step in the right direction.”
Bradshaw Mountain fell to (1-1) and (2-5) while Prescott (2-1) and (6-9) will travel to face ALA-Queen Creek on Monday at 7pm.
