There seemed to be a theory a few years ago, that went across all of the political spectrum, that the United States incarcerated way too many people. “Experts” would point out that we imprisoned a much higher proportion of our population than any other civilized nation. That may be true, but many rational thinkers believe that part of the reason for our high imprisonment rate is because we have more freedom than most other countries.
More freedoms supply more opportunities to commit crime. For example, Freedom of Speech provides opportunists a vehicle to commit fraud and libel. The Freedom to Bear Arms enables criminals with the capability to commit armed robberies, assaults and murder, although it also provides honest individuals with the power to protect themselves against those crimes. More proof can be found in the fact that whenever martial law, curfews and other civil restrictions are imposed, the crime rate takes a nosedive.
Globalists, Democrats and media propagandists love to point to erroneous statistics that show today’s crime rates are lower, even though there are fewer law enforcement officers, fewer arrests, convictions and imprisonments. The reasons these stats are so specious is that with fewer police, less crimes are being reported. Police response times to crimes become longer and some never get answered. In addition, in many so-called progressive areas, many violent crimes have been reclassified from felonies to misdemeanors or are now listed as “nonviolent.” There is also evidence that some law enforcement executives, often at the behest of politicians, alter crime stats to hide the fact that the crime rates are rising.
Those who promote defunding the police, lowering criminal sentences, “no cash bail”, and releasing “nonviolent” offenders from prison, use these stilted statistics so that their agendas can stay in place or expand. These are the same socialist, left leaning hypocrites who claim that illegal alien criminals commit fewer crimes than our own legal citizens.
While no reasoning individual would suggest that there is not a need for rehabilitation programs for convicted criminals, there are many of these programs that do not work, and yet they are still receiving taxpayer funding. Those rehab programs that do show success in slowing or stopping repeat offenders are often defunded in “woke” states because they are based on religious principles, which are counter to the left’s policies.
The formula to a return to safe streets is simple, although it may prove difficult to put into effect in some areas. First, require a cash bail for the release of suspects who commit crimes and the amount of that bail should be appropriate to the crime charged. Second, release no convicts from prison until their time is served, with possible exceptions for “good time” served, where appropriate. Third, reenact or reimpose the “three strikes and you’re out” laws that send repeat offenders in prison for a very long time. Fourth, build more jails and prisons and fill them with criminals.
More crooks in prison means less victims on the street.
