“Every two years the American politics industry fills the airwaves with the most virulent, scurrilous, wall-to-wall character assassination of nearly every political practitioner in the country – and then declares itself puzzled that America has lost trust in its politicians.” – Charles Krauthammer
The history of most off-year Congressional elections almost always favors the party that is the opposite of the President that is in office. The conventional wisdom is that the Democrats this year, would take back a majority in the house and had a good chance of regaining a majority in the Senate. Things have changed this election season.
While many political observers are still predicting Democrat victories in House and Senate races, they seem to be less self assured. The reason for their optimism is that the polls show that President Trump’s approval rating is low, about 39%.
While inflation is still much lower than the Biden years, the war in Iran has forced up fuel prices. The cost of transporting all goods is rising as a result. Inflation is currently about 3.4% which is about a point higher than before the war in Iran. The Democrats are characterizing the war in Iran as “unlawful”, “unauthorized”, a “forever war” and a “war of choice”. It is hardly any of those things, but the media keeps harping on these Democrat talking points. Thus the war is unpopular with the public, according to polls. President Trump needs to utilize his “bully pulpit” to reeducate the people.
The optimists in the Democrat party and the media think that voters will rebel against the Republicans in the November elections because of these reasons. They are doing everything in their power to accentuate the negatives in the economy and the war in Iran. They never mention any of the positives or benefits.
There is hope on the MAGA side, also. The Democrat party is currently in disarray. The Democrat Socialists in that party have won primary elections over establishment Democrat candidates. The establishment Democrats, (and the Republicans), believe that these anti-establishment socialist candidate nominees will lose in the upcoming elections. Since the opinions of the demographic group between the ages of 18 to 36 show that they have a positive view of socialism, Republicans need to address the history of socialism and communism. Socialist/communists have NEVER succeeded economically anywhere they have gained power. They have ALWAYS resulted in despotism and a loss of basic freedoms for the populations that have suffered from their governance.
There are 36 states that will be electing governors this year. In Arizona, Governor Katie Hobbs holds a slight lead over Congressman Andy Biggs in the polls. Biggs has a good chance of unseating Hobbs if he can show the voters how “Veto Katie” has thwarted more legislation than any other governor in Arizona history. In a state that is a national leader in School Choice, Biggs needs to emphasize how Governor Hobbs is against choice and how she is a puppet to the teacher unions. Andy Biggs also needs to show that Hobbs is anti-2nd Amendment to the voters, who are vastly pro gun in this state. All Republican candidates in the state need to focus on these issues, especially in the Attorney General race that pits Republican Warren Petersen against Democrat Kris Mayes. Republican candidates at all levels of state and local government need to accentuate the records of Democrat incumbents.
The optimist in me has faith in the American voter; that they will overwhelmingly reject socialism, that they will see that the so-called “moderate” Democrats views are not that different than the Democratic Socialists and that they will vote Republican majorities back into the House and the Senate. Optimistically, they will also vote in Republican governors and state legislators. Let’s all pray that we optimists are correct.
