The Prescott Badgers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Flagstaff Eagles 13-12 at Prescott High School to split the season series between the two schools.
Trailing 12-11, Travis Gates started off the inning with a single. That turned out to be the only hit in the inning as the Eagle pitchers could not find the strike zone. Gates would score to tie the game at 12, then a final walk would end the game giving Prescott the much needed win.

Travis Gates had a good day at the plate, reaching base all five times he came up that included two singles, a double and three RBIs. Gates said, “This was a way different game from Tuesday. We lost a pitchers duel and won today by outscoring them. Flag always comes out and plays us tough and we really needed to get this win. Now we just have to close out the regular season strong and see who get in the playoffs.”
The game was tied 4-4 through four innings and that’s when things went sideways for the Badgers and especially for starting pitcher Matt Hepperle. The senior lefty said, “We really needed that win today. Everybody was into the game today and a lot of the guys stepped up to do what needed to be done. I thought I had good stuff today, good control, but some crazy things happen and before you know it you’re done some runs.” One of those crazy things occurred in the top of the 5th with the Badgers leading 7-4. Hepperle jammed the batter who managed a shallow pop up that the pitcher ran in for. The ball with a wicked spin would not stay in the glove resulting in loading the bases. “I was really happy with how I threw even though the scoreboard got pretty high. That was just being unlucky I guess,” added Hepperle.
On Tuesday, Prescott fell 2-0 in a pitchers duel. Travis Gates came up with another outstanding effort but solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings proved costly. The Badgers were kept under wraps by Jace Adams. The ASU commit pitched a complete game shutout scattering four hits over seven innings with 9Ks.
