President or King? – Jill Keller, Ph.D.

America first began hearing the phrase ‘No Kings’ in June of 2025 with the first protest leading to a second in October of that same year. We are now in 2026, and the phrase has become a ‘mantra’ a ‘slogan’ from individuals who wish to promote the teaching of Karl Marx. ‘No Kings’ has become a platform where left-leaning thinking is growing toward communism and seeking the destruction of capitalism.

To review just a moment, basic American history teaches us that as a young country we fought a war for independence from Great Britain.  As colonies, we won political independence from England and became the United States of America. On August 2, 1776, a precious document called the Declaration of Independence was signed and America had ‘No King.’

In 1848, a German revolutionary by the name of Karl Marx published another document called the Communist Manifesto. History records this document as serving for the platform of communist principals and teachings.  Marxism is attractive to individuals who do not understand how capitalism keeps an economy moving forward. Although there is ‘abuse’ of capitalism, without it any country will run out of money and society will be plunged into chaos and eventual destruction.

In America, we have an elected President. We are not under the leadership of a Monarchy, and we do not have a King. Whether we are happy with the President Elected, we do have the opportunity every four years to make a change. The protests and the ‘No Kings’ platform are a way for people of like mind to meet and validate themselves. According to Alpert (2026)” these gatherings offer not only political expression but psychological alignment—a sense of being among others who see the world the same way” (para 10).

People have a need for validation and to be heard. By protesting the idea of a President being a King creates an importance that is fulfilled for certain personalities. The idea of ‘No King’ feeds a platform across America that pushes the conflict theory that Karl Marx believed was between the ruling class and the working class. ‘No Kings’ is just a platform for leftist groups to promote Marxist philosophy. Simply stated, the conflict theory that Karl Marx is known for suggests that society consists of different groups of people competing and struggling against each other for scarce resources (Knox, 2023). Blue cities across America are pushing for this same concept. The new mayor of New York City is finding conflict with how capitalism doesn’t work for the masses; however, he and his family are worth a fortune and live well. Communism is an ideology that might sound good on paper, but like Socialism, it has never worked and never will work.

Ronald Reagan gave his Inaugural Speech as Governor of California in 1967. As this future President stated in that speech. “Freedom is a fragile thing and it’s never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people.  And those in world history who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again” (Reagan Presidential Library, 2026).

  1. I have driven by the square downtown and seen these individuals with their signs declaring ‘No King.’ What really annoys me is when you talk to these people, they do not understand our constitution, what democracy is, nor can they or do they understand what capitalism is and how it works. Dr. Keller mentions abuse of capitalism, and yes there is a lot of this. But without capitalism, this country would be like any other communistic ‘banana’ republic.

  2. Much of the Marxist ideology mentioned in this editorial is being fueled by the socialistic and communistic indoctrination that our younger generations have been receiving in our public schools and colleges. It becomes easy to support something like the No Kings Movement, when you have been told by trusted (but not trustworthy) teachers and professors over and over again that Marxism and Socialism are good and Capitalism is poisoning our society. We need to reform our public education system and colleges, lest we lose the very foundation of our country to a communistic / socialistic system of government.
