The Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) marks one year of its ground ambulance transport service, celebrating a successful first year of providing life-saving emergency care to the communities of Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, Dewey-Humboldt, and surrounding areas.
From October 1, 2024 to October 1, 2025, CAFMA’s rescue units completed 1,833 patient transports, an average of 150 per month, reflecting the growing impact of this critical service. These results are a testament to the dedication and expertise of CAFMA’s firefighters, who are trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and Certified Emergency Paramedics. Their advanced skills and commitment have made a tangible difference in the lives of residents across the Quad Cities.
In addition to medical transportation, CAFMA Rescue units have responded to structure fires, serious vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, and other urgent emergencies, further highlighting the scope of the organization’s work.
Among the most notable incidents was a ‘code save’ early in 2025, when Rescue 62 responded to a patient experiencing difficulty breathing that quickly progressed to cardiac arrest. Through immediate recognition and advanced medical intervention, CAFMA crews successfully restored the patient’s heart rate and ensured safe transport to the hospital for further care. The patient not only survived, but was able to walk out of the hospital on their own.
Another critical call involved a patient experiencing a heart attack, where CAFMA’s Rescue 58 and Engine 53 crews worked seamlessly to assess, treat, and transport the patient to the hospital’s cath lab in less than an hour. These cases highlight CAFMA’s ability to provide rapid, coordinated, and effective emergency care.
“This first year has been extraordinary for our team and our community,” said Fire Chief John Feddema. “Our firefighters have demonstrated the highest level of care and professionalism, making sure that residents receive timely, life-saving treatment. We are proud of what we have accomplished and remain committed to providing the best emergency medical services possible.”
CAFMA’s ambulance service continues to operate 24/7, strengthened by partnerships with Copperstate Ambulance, Life Line Ambulance, and Yavapai Regional Medical Center, ensuring comprehensive coverage for the region.
“Our community’s trust and support have been instrumental in the success of this program,” said Doug Niemynski, CAFMA EMS Chief. “We are honored to serve our neighbors, and this milestone reflects the positive impact that dedicated, highly trained first responders can make every day.”
