Badgers Slide Continues at Coconino 42-26: High School Football Roundup

Prescott at Coconino

The Prescott Badgers fell for the second straight week in a road game played in a dome, this time to the Coconino Panthers 42-26. The game was originally scheduled at Coconino High School, but due to the forecasted rainy weather, it was moved to the NAU Skydome, with an earlier kickoff time at 3pm. The reason was Flagstaff was to host Mohave at 7pm.

Coming in Coconino was at .500 like the Badgers, but the Panthers had lost their three games to very good teams by a total of 12 points. Meanwhile, Prescott was coming off getting blasted last week at Mohave. Another key to the game was the Badgers were without running backs Braylon Johnson and Jacob Chamberlain and linebacker Menno Dow.

The Badgers defense shined early and came up with a fumble recovery at the Prescott 3 yard line midway through the first quarter. The momentum of stopping the Panthers was quickly lost when Dylan Buckley stepped in front of a Gio Pugliese pass to take it 16 yards for a pick-six and a 7-0 lead for Coconino.

The Panthers extended their lead when Dylan Callado maneuvered his way down the home sideline for 64 yards to make it 14-0. Coconino quarterback Jake Hanley connected with Austin Raths on a 24 yard scoring strike and it was 21-0 early into the second quarter.

Prescott put together a strong dive that paid off when Gio Pugliese found Kenny Miller-Terry splitting two defenders on his way for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 21-7 with 6:33 left in the half.

The Panthers put the Badgers in a big hole in the final minute of the second quarter when Hanley hit Jeffs on a six yard TD pass with :21 seconds on the clock. A “surprise” onside kick was then recovered by Coconino at the Prescott 47 with just :19 on the clock. It proved costly as well as Hanley threw a bomb that Raths pulled in to make the score 35-7 at the half.

Coconino took the second half kickoff and went 67 yards on six plays to score when Callado rumbled the final 31 yards to extend their lead to 42-7 with 8:31 left in the third.

Pugliese had more success connecting with Miller-Terry on a 33 yard pass to get the Badgers within 42-14.

The Panthers had the ball deep in their own territory twice in the fourth quarter and pulled off a rather shrewd move. The Coconino coaching staff elected to take a pair of safeties rather than risking a short or blocked punt that would give the Badgers any advantage down the stretch. Down 42-18, Prescott scored one final touchdown on a pass from Pugliese to Miller-Terry closing out the fourth quarter as Badgers slipped to (1-3) in the Grand Canyon Region and (3-4) overall.

The win keeps Coconino in the hunt for region title as they improve to (3-0) and (4-3). The Panthers will travel to Lee Williams on Friday. The Badgers will host Flagstaff on Thursday at 7pm.

Bradshaw Mountain at Lee Williams

The Bradshaw Mountain Bears got two third quarter touchdowns and held on the final minutes to beat the Lee Williams Volunteers 13-7 in a hard fought rain drenched night in Kingman.

Both offenses struggled in the first half, but the Bears had a golden opportunity slip away right off the bat. Sebastian Witkowski intercepted a Morgan Quinn pass on the first play from scrimmage at the Volunteers 19. Along with the rain, came yellow flags that pushed Bradshaw Mountain the opposite direction, back to near midfield forcing a punt. That would be the closest either team came to scoring as the teams headed to the locker room with goose eggs on the board.

After another exchange of possessions, the Bears got the break they needed. A line drive punt was field by Kylin Jackson who went 65 yards to put the Bradshaw Mountain on top. Womble added the extra point and it was 7-0 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter.

Lee Williams went three and out and the Bears came up with another big play. It was Jackson again rushing 20 yards through the Volunteers defense for a 13-0 lead as the third quarter came to an end.

The Volunteers with their backs against the wall came through offensively in the fourth putting together a 77 yards drive capped off by a Lucas Leist run of five yards, and the added extra point made it 13-7 with 8:31 left in the game.

The Bears offense went on a marathon time killing drive as the rain kept falling and the spirits of Lee Williams diminished. Bradshaw Mountain ran 16 plays to take the clock down to under a minute to play before punting to the Volunteers. Lee Williams started at their own five yard line and ran out of time.

Kylin Jackson led the Bears with 101 yards rushing on 21 carries and Lucas Leist led the Volunteers with 100 yards on 21 carries.

The win could set up a showdown with Coconino for the Grand Canyon Region championship in two weeks. The Bears improve to (3-0) and (5-2), while Lee Williams falls to (3-1) and (5-2).

Bradshaw Mountain will host Buckeye in a non-region contest on Friday at 7pm. Lee Williams will host Coconino.

  1. 1st safety of the the coconino/prescott game was a block punt by eli allen, not intentional. 2nd safety was intentional.
