Yavapai Speaks: Interview with Senator Mark Finchem LD-1

Lyle Rapacki, host of Yavapai Speaks, talks to Senator Mark Finchem about his current bills. Sen. Finchem has several bills on cryptocurrency and gives a good explanation on the uses of crypto and public policy. He also addresses the question of the money to Prescott Rodeo Days, and how he made an amendment to a 2013 statute that now redirects that money to the City of Prescott. That bill has passed out of the Senate.

Sen. Finchem talks about the wildfire risks and how the State can help. He appears to take issue with an article (published by Prescott eNews  HERE) claiming that the Rodeo money should have gone to dealing with wildfire prevention, and goes on about it for part of the interview.

  1. According to the City of Prescott’s own data, the top sales tax generator is the Christmas City events (parade and lighting). According to the the city (again) the rodeo brings in $156,000 in sales tax revenue. Period. That pays for about one fully outfitted cop (vehicle, training, uniforms, salary). It’s also clear that Finchem has not spoken with the families who live around the rodeo grounds. They all overwhelmingly support the rodeo and have for the GENERATIONS that they have lived there. They are not newcomers. The objection is to the city turning these same grounds into an event center that would hold many more events (not just the rodeo), which has a significant impact on many neighborhoods. Should the city just come in and devalue property values to plop an unneeded event center with 50 bathrooms in the middle of a residential neighborhood?
