Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Detectives were notified of at least four citizens in Yavapai County that a scammer or scammers targeted over the weekend of January 25-26. These are not small scams, they average 25k dollars, and the victims’ ages range from their 40s to 70s. YCSO is sharing to help prevent future victims.
The scammer claims to be from a bank security office. Warning the victims that their account has been compromised, they must withdraw the money and deposit it into a new account to protect it.
The scammer or scammers used different tactics to get money from the unsuspecting victims. One victim told detectives she was manipulated to give cash to a scammer who came to her home. Another victim sent money using Bitcoin, and two others used a bank or card number. In one case, a potential victim was moments away from sending thousands of dollars, but the bank teller realized the situation and helped prevent her from sending money.
Detectives advise you to hang up the phone, and not just talk to your bank but go to your bank in person to verify, then call the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office at (928) 771-3260.
You can also call the Sheriff’s Office if you believe you have been a victim or have been approached by a possible scammer.

Amazing that so many people fall for the scammers’ lies. Sadly, the victims tend to be in the older
age crowd. My advice: Don’t give ANY personal information or cash to these rats, and don’t fall for
messages from so-called police, Sheriff’s department or your bank. Chances are that they are all
bogus messages that will make it easy for the scammers to plunder your savings and leave you
homeless. Hang up on phone calls from those you don’t know and delete emails for anyone who
requests for money or threatens your arrest if you fail to provide your SS number, bank account number, address, or any other personal information. Many of these fake messages come from
sources in Nigeria or other country. Do NOT fall into their traps that will leave you broke and homeless.
