The Prescott Badgers had their own senior night with a 64-42 win over the Bradshaw Mountain Bears in Prescott Valley.
All the Badger points came from seniors with Uriah Tenette leading the way with 30 points. Josiah Peoples had a big game off the bench with 13, Zane Gaul 10 and Cooper Magnett closed the scoring out with 9.
Prescott came out and fell behind early 5-0. A bucket by Cooper Magnett gave the Badgers their first lead 8-7 with just under three minutes to play in the opening quarter.
An eleven zip run would bolster the lead to 19-9 and the Badgers never looked back. The lead grew to 25-11 when Tenette drilled back to back threes. The senior put down his first of three dunks in the game but got rung up with a technical foul for hanging on the rim. Josiah Peoples slammed one down to make it 31-14. Zane Gaul closed out the first half with a put back bucket as Prescott led 33-14 at the half.
Peoples said, “Always love to play in the rivalry games. The fan support was amazing. I was able to get some great looks tonight and knock them down. Glad I was able to contribute as much as I did and with this my last game here getting a win was big.”
The second half saw the Badger lead go as high as 23 points with the Bears trying desperately to get back into the game, but only managed to get within 16 points on two separate occasions.
Tenette was able to get one more clear shot at the basket and put down a dunk with authority to add an exclamation point on the win.
Tenette, in his final game at the rival high school said, “I’m gonna miss it. They have a good atmosphere over here and that make it a lot of fun to play.” As for the game, “It took us a couple to minutes to get things going tonight but once we started playing Badger basketball we were on our way.”
Preston Ranniker led the Bears with 12 points who fall to (1-1) in the Grand Canyon Region and (11-7) overall.
The two teams will meet again on January 30 in the Badger Dome at Prescott High School. Prescott improves to (2-0) and (8-5). The Badgers will host ALA-Queen Creek on Monday at 7 pm. Bradshaw Mountain travels on Tuesday to play Coconino.
