The Most Notable Ways Installing a Shed Helps You as a Homeowner

If you can ever afford your own home, that is commendable, especially if you have saved up enough money to reach this point. Fewer families and individuals can do that these days with soaring home prices and stagnant wages. If you have a job that pays well, though, or you are part of a multiple-income family, you have a better chance of reaching the home ownership stage.

When you’re looking at homes, you need to think about what comes with each one and every element’s condition. For instance, does the house’s roof look stable? What about the foundation and the HVAC system? Then, you might want to look at the backyard to see if it has space for your kids or dog to run around.

You should look at whether the yard has a shed as well. If it doesn’t, you may think about installing one at some point. Deciding between wood and metal sheds might not enter your mind when you’re thinking about whether or not to put a bid in on a house, but within the first year or two of living there, you may start to think about it more urgently.

Why might you want a shed as a homeowner, though? The answer might not seem obvious at first, especially if you have never owned a home before. Thinking about it should reveal the answer, though. We’ll lay out some of the main reasons why homeowners often consider shed installation right now.

You Can Store Your Lawnmower in There

For one thing, you can keep your lawnmower in the shed if you have one. Assuming you bought a detached, single-family home that sits on a little land, then presumably, you will own a lawnmower. You might need it starting in late spring. The so-called “lawn-mowing season” might extend into late fall, depending on where in the country you live and what kind of seasons you have.

You may have a walk-behind or riding lawnmower. Either way, it’s going to take up some space. While you might have room for that mower in your garage or elsewhere, it’s nice if you have it in the shed in the backyard. This way, you can easily unlock the shed and get the mower out whenever you need it.

You Can Keep Additional Tools in There

You may also like to garden. Plenty of homeowners do. You might find it relaxing. Keeping up with the weeding and other landscaping keeps the property looking nice and should earn you some compliments from the neighbors, friends, or relatives.

You will need to own additional gardening tools, and possibly others to maintain the property. You can keep all of those in the shed as well, assuming you bought one that has enough room. Most of them do. You can often keep your mower in there along with a wide variety of tools, especially if you hang them up on hooks on the walls.

You Can Keep Caustic Chemicals in There

You might need to keep caustic chemicals, such as poisons, on your property. For instance, you may buy a container of insecticide or herbicide at Home Depot or Lowes. You can use them to spray for mosquitos at certain times of the year. You may need the herbicide to deal with invading weeds that threaten your yard’s aesthetic appeal.

If you have those kinds of poisons, it’s probably best you keep them somewhere out of the main house. You can keep them in the garage, but if you have an attached garage, that’s not ideal either.

Maybe you have toddlers or younger kids in the home. If so, you want those chemicals as far from them as possible. Storing them in the shed makes sense.

It Creates Additional Storage

You can use the shed for additional storage as well. Maybe you have odds and ends that you don’t have space for in the attic, garage, or basement.

Putting them in the shed can be an easy solution. Sticking those outdoor holiday decorations in the shed makes it easy to get them out when Halloween, Easter, or Christmas rolls around.

It Improves the Home’s Resale Value

A shed can also boost the home’s eventual resale value. It’s a relatively small detail, not like installing a new roof or a brand-new furnace. However, you never know when something that seems minor might convince a buyer who’s on the fence to put in a bid.
