The competition was fierce and the battles intense in the 12th annual Cal Cordes Singles Horseshoe Tournament held at Watson Lake in Prescott.
It was a “chamber of commerce” weather day as the pitchers settled in to determine the best of the best during this season opening event by the Mile Hi Horseshoe Club.
Hal Handelman stood head above shoulders above the rest when the dust settled to take home the overall tournament championship. He held off a spirited rally by Cody Williams, who had to settle for second. John Lincoln finished third.

Class B saw a rookie take home his first patch of 2024. Brian Belcher was able to withstand credible challenges by Jay Mast, who finished second, and Steve Harman took home third. Mast bested Harman in the final game of the day to come out ahead of his third place opponent.
Cordes said, “It was a great day to be out here at the lake. We saw some real good competition by the players and the weather could not have been any better. Horseshoe pitching has been part of my life for a long time and it is always good to see everyone come out and have a good time. It is a good sport to play and to get to visit with some good people. Anybody interested should come out and give it a try.”
The club will team up with the Prescott Valley Horseshoe Club for the first of their annual back to back tournaments on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2. Start times are at 9am.
