“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” – attributed to Thomas Jefferson
The Founding Fathers, before composing the Constitution, had researched governments throughout history. From their research, they came to the conclusion that government was a necessary evil. Since it was necessary, they were obliged to create one. They saw that even in the best forms of government, power was a corrupting factor, so they created checks and balances between the legislative, executive and judicial branches. They wanted the powers and duties of the Federal government to be few and specified, and the powers of the individual states and the people to be much greater. (Hence, the 10th Amendment.)
Debate over the new proposed Constitution continued and it was decided that Amendments needed to be added. For the most part, these Amendments were meant to address the abuses that the British government had imposed on the colonists. Freedoms of speech, press, religion and the right to peacefully assemble and redress grievances were thought to be very important and so, were encapsulated in the First Amendment.
The Second Amendment was adopted from three states that had incorporated very similar wording in their state constitutions as early as 1780. The words are unequivocal. “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The preliminary phrase regarding a “well regulated militia”, in no way negates the right to keep and bear, (carry) arms.
The reasons for including the Second Amendment are many. Self defense was important in the late 1700s. As the current wave of violent crime rises today, it is even more important that we have the right to carry weapons. The Founding Fathers also foresaw that the Constitutional guarantee of our rights might get eroded over time. When that happens, the Declaration of Independence states, “…when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them (the people) under absolute Despotism, it is their (the people’s) Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
With the Obama/Biden criminal cartel in charge, that appears to be happening now. There are a couple of options to change the direction the current government is going. First, we must vote out those who want to suborn our rights to their illogical, inane, woke, communist, globalist agenda. Next there is the Article V, Convention of the States to amend or enhance our Constitutional rights. They will not be able to complete this erosion unless and until the emasculation or elimination of the Second Amendment. With so many armed Americans throughout our country, the non-insurrection that took place on January 6, 2020, would be seen for the real protest/mini-riot it actually was. The fear of the Second Amendment will be the only thing that will prevent the elite power cartel from a full scale theft of all of our Constitutional rights.
