New Roundabout Laws Take Effect October 30th, 2023 – Chino Valley Police Department

With the passage of House Bill 2288, recently signed into law by Governor Katie Hobbs, some laws have been added to the Arizona Revised Statue (ARS) regarding large vehicle right-of-way within roundabouts. These changes took effect yesterday, October 30th, 2023, and are covered under ARS 28-778. Since the Town of Chino Valley is home to roundabouts, which will affect drivers, it is important that residents know the laws and abide by them, for their safety and the safety of others. In addition to the current roundabout laws, there are two new laws which are listed below:

Arizona Revised Statute 28-778

  1. When approaching or driving through a roundabout, a person who is driving a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to the operator who is driving a vehicle or combination of vehicles with a total length of at least forty feet or a total width of at least ten feet through the roundabout at the same time or so closely in time as to present an immediate hazard and shall slow down or stop if necessary to yield. This subsection does not require a person who is driving a vehicle through a roundabout to yield the right-of-way to the operator of a vehicle or combination of vehicles with a total length of at least forty feet or a total width of at least ten feet that is approaching the roundabout.
  2.  If two vehicles or combination of vehicles each having a total length of at least forty feet or a total width of at least ten feet approach or drive through a roundabout at the same time or so closely in time as to present an immediate hazard, the driver on the right shall yield the right-of-way to the driver on the left and shall slow down or stop if necessary to yield.

It should be noted that these are new statewide laws created by the Arizona Legislature and can be enforced by any law enforcement agency within their jurisdiction.

Please drive safely and be courteous to other motorists in the roundabouts.

  1. with being a retired Driver, this of course should be common sense!
we do have the problem,of the newer drivers, not knowing what he/she is doing!
Hobbs needs to get busy with what is blasted important for Arizonians! like keeping blasted men!!!! out of women sports, bathrooms, locker rooms etc! To me, these types of politicians are! Insider trading, like Kelly said he was going to change! etc

  2. WOW! I did 30 years in law enforcement, several as a traffic homicide investigator. This is the dumbest traffic law I’ve EVER heard of!!!!!!
