Badgers Fall At Coconino 42-37

The Prescott Badgers scored first and last, but in-between gave up too many points in suffering a 42-37 loss to the Coconino Panthers on a cool evening in Flagstaff.

Josiah Peoples got things started off with an electrifying 95 yard kickoff return to momentarily stun the Panthers home crowd on Coconino senior night. Jed Rummage added the kick for a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers then seemed unfazed, coming back with a long drive capped off with the first of three Bridger French touchdowns to tie the game at seven. French proved once again that he is one of the top running backs in the state, garnishing 255 yards on the night.

Jed Rummage added a field goal after the next Badger drive was stopped for a 10-7 lead. Prescott was hampered by seven false starts in the first half alone.

Coconino would take advantage of the Prescott miscues and would boost their lead to 28-17 at the half. The final TD of the half came on a blocked punt that was returned by Asher Young to boost the Panther lead to 11.

Trailing 42-24 after three quarters, the Badgers held the Panthers scoreless in the final quarter as they mounted a comeback. Johann Gundermann scored on a touchdown pass with eleven minutes left from quarterback Jaxon Rice, and then Adam Lloyd rushed for a touchdown with 3:16 left. Rice had a good night going 14-15-1, 316 yards and two touchdowns.

Coconino was able to run the ball to grind the clock out to remain in the hunt for the GCR title with Bradshaw Mountain and Lee Williams.

Prescott was led on the ground by Tenette with 68 yards on six carries and one TD. Lloyd carried the ball 13 times for 40 and a score. Receiving, Gundermann caught three passes for 132 yards and the two touchdowns. Jed Rummage had five receptions for 73 yards and Tenette four catches for 46 yards. Cort Lewis led the defense with 10 tackles.

The Badgers fell to (1-3) in the GCR, and (3-6) overall. Prescott will host Mingus in what will be the final game of the season for both schools. Coconino will play Flagstaff in the NAU Walkup Skydome.
