PRESCOTT AT COMBS
The Badger defense pitched their second road shutout of the season with a 42-0 win over the Combs Coyotes in the San Tan Valley. It was a game Prescott needed to get themselves ready for the start of region play next week.
Offensively, the Badgers were led by Uriah Tenette, who went 7-9-0, 131 yards at quarterback, with 55 yards rushing, and accounting for four touchdowns, two each on the ground and through the air. Johann Gundermann caught two passes, both for touchdowns.
Defensively, Coyotes quarterback, freshman Kannin Hale was kept off balance all night by the Badger defense. Wyatt Rewerts had a pick six to open the game, but a penalty on Prescott placed the ball back at the Coyotes 21 yard line to start their opening drive. Uriah Tenette used the left side of the line to create a hole to go four yards for the first score of the night. Jed Rummage, who would be a perfect on the night, added the extra point for a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game.
Prescott went up 14-0 with 7:39 left in the opening quarter when Tenette scored his second TD on a 24 yard run.
Tenette connected with Gundermann for a 27 yard scoring strike to open the second quarter.
Combs (1-4), finally had some success moving the ball midway through the second quarter, but turned the ball over on downs at the Badger 48. Rice threw the ball long to Gundermann in the end zone, but the ball was intercepted by Nathan Alvarez. Once again the Prescott defense led by the front four of Cooper Kasun, Macrae Kasun, Gunnar Parra, and Isaac Muffley forced another three and out.
The Badgers pushed the lead to 28-0 when Adam Lloyd pulled in a Tenette pass, then fought off a defender, going the final 25 yards for the touchdown.
The officials created some confusion on the next series of downs. The Coyotes came back with a strong dive down to the Badger 12, but a Hale pass was picked off at the five yard line by Tenette. After some confusion, there was a penalty called on Prescott giving the ball back to Combs at the Badger six. Nathan Alvarez would run the ball in from five yards out, but after a timeout the ball was placed back at their six yard line. Eventually, the Badger defense once again with linebackers Cort Lewis and Wyatt Rewerts, held the Coyotes to keep the shutout intact.
After a scoreless third quarter, Prescott would add two more touchdowns in the fourth. Rice scored on a three yard run, and Gundermann ran in the final score from 25 yards out.
Prescott (2-3) will open Grand Canyon Region play in Kingman on Thursday night at 7pm, when they face the Lee Williams Volunteers who suffered their first loss of the season, a 40-6 setback at Mohave.
