There were two injury collisions within a few days of each other on SR 89 in Chino Valley that prompted temporary roadway closures.
The first collision occurred on July 7th at approximately 5:44am. Chino Valley Police Officers were dispatched to the area of South State Route 89 and Road 1 South regarding a vehicle collision with possible injuries.
When officers arrived, they found a heavily damaged white 2007 Toyota Sienna and a blue 2002 Ford F250 at the collision scene. The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota, a 37-year-old male from Paulden, sustained serious injuries to his leg(s). The driver of the Ford, a 54-year-old male from Chino Valley, and his passenger, a 58-year-old male from Chino Valley, denied medical attention at the scene. Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) and Lifeline personnel responded to the scene to treat the driver of the Toyota.
Southbound traffic on South State Route 89 was temporarily shut down to get the roadway cleared and to land a helicopter in a nearby field. The driver of the Toyota was airlifted by Native Air to a nearby hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the Toyota was travelling south on SR 89 and rear-ended the Ford, which was stopped at a red light at Road 1 South. Speed and distracted driving are listed as contributing factors to the collision.
At this time, the investigation is on-going and identification of those involved will be held pending the completion of the investigation.
The Chino Valley Police Department would like to thank motorists for their understanding and patience while the roadway was closed temporarily. We also want to thank our partnering agencies for their assistance, including the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority, Lifeline Ambulance, Native Air, and Tri-City Towing.
The second collision occurred on July 9th at approximately 4:16pm. Chino Valley Police officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of North State Route 89 regarding a single vehicle rollover with possible injuries.
When officers arrived, they found a white 2009 Chevrolet pickup had rolled over and was off the roadway. The vehicle was occupied by three people. The driver, a 15-year-old male from Prescott Valley and front passenger, a 48-year-old female, also from Prescott Valley denied medical attention at the scene. The rear passenger, a 49-year-old male from Prescott Valley, sustained serious head trauma. Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) and Lifeline personnel responded to the scene to treat the rear passenger, who was eventually air-lifted by Native Air to a nearby hospital, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was travelling southbound on SR 89 and for unknown reasons drifted to the right shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle struck an APS pole, lost control, and overturned.
At this time, the investigation is on-going and identification of those involved will be held pending the completion of the investigation.
