Jazz lovers should mark their calendars! The Raven Cafe is celebrating International Jazz Day with The OrganNauts and special guest, saxophonist Dave Russell.
In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. International Jazz Day is chaired by UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as the UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. The Institute is the nonprofit charged with planning, promoting and producing this annual celebration.
In keeping with the international flavor, The OrganNauts will feature original compositions from legends Joe Zawinul (Austria), and Lalo Schifrin (Argentina); along with Michael Blicher (Germany), Ronson & Winehouse (UK), Dmitri Kolesnik (Russia) and saxophonist Troy Roberts (Australia). Throughout the evening, the quartet will also perform arrangements from Italy’s Quintetto X and award-winning Bandleader/Organist Akiko Tsuruga (Japan). Downbeat Magazine’s Critics Poll named Tsuruga the 2020 Rising Star for Organ.
Formed in 2019, The OrganNauts include Troy Schilperoort on keyboards, bassist Selwyn Reams, and drummer Ted Bouras. The OrganNauts are the house band for the Raven Cafe’s First Thursday Jazz Jam Session. Since their debut, the trio has welcomed local and Phoenix-based special guests, including Andrew Gross, Adam Roberts, Jayson Owen Davis, Stan Sorenson, Candace Devine, Bob Shimizu, Dave Russell, Bill Lieske and Brian Zabriskie.
Music begins at 7pm at the Raven Cafe 142 N Cortez in Historic Downtown Prescott.
