On June 14, 2026, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA), along with the Prescott Fire Department, responded to a reported vegetation fire in the area of Road 6 North in Chino Valley.
Upon arrival, crews discovered a large dead cottonwood tree actively burning, believed to have been ignited by a lightning strike. The fire had also begun to spread into surrounding vegetation, including nearby piles of additional dead trees.

Firefighters quickly initiated suppression efforts using brush trucks, hand tools, and chainsaws. Crews were able to contain the fire and remained on scene through the night and into the following day to monitor for hotspots and ensure full containment.
No injuries were reported.
Dead trees present a significant challenge for firefighters due to their instability and unpredictable behavior. During operations, the burning cottonwood began to fall in large sections before ultimately collapsing approximately 12 hours after crews first arrived.
Community members reported that eagles had previously nested in the tree in past years, though thankfully, no recent nesting activity was observed.
CAFMA reminds residents to call 9-1-1 immediately if they observe any unusual smoke or flames. Early reporting allows fire crews to respond quickly and can help prevent small incidents from becoming larger emergencies.
CAFMA thanks the Prescott Fire Department, Chino Valley Police Department, and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and coordination on scene.
