Varsity Baseball
It was a big day for senior Travis Gates who had a pair of hits with 4 RBIs, including belting a two run homer in the second inning and also was solid on the mound as he pitched his way for the win. Gates only gave up one run on four hits in five innings of work while striking out six to lead the Badgers to a 8-2 win over the Coconino Panthers.
Gates said, “I came out today and I was ready to get it done. I wanted to do it on both sides of the ball and we were able to get some runs early and I was able to keep them in check for five. Being able to hit a home run and getting a double to add to our lead kept me relaxed knowing I just had to go challenge them. I felt good out there and gave us a good five and then kind of ran out of gas.”

Gates’ second inning blast over the left center field fence put the Badgers up 5-0. He added a two run double to that for a 7-1 lead in the 4th. Kaden Lampe pitched the final two innings as the Badgers improved to (4-0) in the Grand Canyon Region and (11-5) overall.
Coach Jason Hutchens said, “Always good to sweep a region team. I was happy with the overall play. We just need to clean up some baserunning mistakes because a really good team is going to make you pay for those mistakes. We are continuing to improve with our hitting and fielding along with our pitching.”
Shortstop Nick Martin said, “Another good day for us and always good to get a season sweep. Coming off that game at Chase Field we still had plenty of energy out to get the win.” Martin was referring to the Badgers game Tuesday night at Chase Field in Phoenix, where the Badgers beat Coconino 4-2. “That was awesome. It took a little bit to settle down and get focused, but we did and got the win.” Hutchens and gates echoed similar settlements. Gates said, “Getting to play in an MLB park is something I will never forget. Hutchens said, “That was an awesome experience for all of us. I hope we can do it again next year.”
