Last Tuesday night, President Trump gave the longest State of the Union Speech in the history of those annual events. The morning before the speech, either Clay Travis or Buck Sexton, (I can’t remember which one made the statement), said that he hoped the President remembered that short speeches are usually the best speeches. Most of us would agree with that sentiment. There are, however, exceptions. No matter what the object, whether it is a movie, a book, an essay or a song, if it holds the interest of the observer to the end, it is not too long.

From the start, the speech grabbed one’s attention. Publicity-grabbing Representative Al Green got kicked out again this year, by holding up a sign that read, “Black people aren’t apes”. One has to assume that this moronic politician fails to see the irony when he acts like an ape while holding that sign.

It is uncertain what Democrats thought of the length of the speech, since they had done everything in their power to silence Trump between his first and second term, but they take every opportunity to criticize anything he says. Also, some of the most woke leftists Democrat Representatives tried to disrupt the President with that sign or loud comments from their seats. Most of the rest of the Democrat contingent never applauded and rarely stood.

Whether it is the experience President Trump has as a businessman, a deal maker, a politician, or knowledge gained in the entertainment industry, he held our interest, (at least for those I talked to and those who watched the address with me). He did this with a series of recognitions of those in the audience. He pointed out military heroes in the gallery and gave out two Congressional Medals of Honor. (As an aside, this is a much better venue to give out the medal than at a small White House ceremony that receives little news coverage.)

Trump highlighted Angel moms whose children were killed by criminal illegal aliens. He put the spotlight on a little girl critically injured in a wreck caused by an illegal alien driving a semi tractor trailer. Trump also mentioned those killed by other illegal aliens who obtained commercial driver’s licenses in sanctuary states.

Spontaneous patriotism exploded in the room when our Gold Medal winning Olympic hockey team was introduced by the President. When the team entered, shouts of “USA” bounced off the walls. Trump recognized the goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, who recorded 41 saves in the game against Canada. President Trump announced that the goaltender would be receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

President Trump and the Republican members of Congress were able to reveal to the people of our country, the extreme contrast between the Democrats and the GOP. Even when Trump mentioned policies and issues that the vast majority of Americans favor, the sexual transitioning of children, men in women’s sports and locker rooms and rest rooms, voter ID requirements, and other issues, the Democrats sat on their hands while Republicans stood and applauded.

But the near mortal shot to the Democrats hope of reclaiming both houses of Congress was when Trump asked all of those present to stand if they agreed with the statement that the, “first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” None of the Democrats stood with the exception of Senator John Fetterman. Hopefully, all American voters, Democrat, Republican and Independent, will remember that visual of Democrats in Congress refusing to stand for protecting Americans.
