The Coconino Panthers used their quickness while taking advantage of some Prescott miscues to beat the Badgers 58-51 in the Badger Dome.

Pedro Jimenez came off the bench to lead the Badgers in scoring with 13 points, six of which coming in the final minutes. Drew Jolley added 12.

Coach Travis Stedman said, “They are really good and when you make mistakes it costs you. I thought we handled their quickness for a good part of the game, but there were two times in particular, at the end of the first quarter and the other at the end of third quarter where it got away from us and we had to try to come back. We did play hard to the end which is what you want from your team.”

The Badgers fell behind by five early, but a Jack Golleher three point basket gave Prescott their first lead at 8-7 with two minutes to play in the quarter. Coconino used pressure along with the press creating Badger turnovers to outscore Prescott 10-3 to lead 17-11 after one.

Prescott battled back and after Jimenez knocked down his first basket trailed by just three at 21-18. His tying three point attempt rimmed out, and the Panthers went on to push their lead to 27-21. Chase Stedman’s runner into the lane closed the gap to 27-23 at the buzzer to end the first half.

The second half started off with the Badgers knocking at the door three times to tie the score, but they were never able to accomplish that.

As the score sat at 32-30 for three straight Prescott possessions, Coconino turned up the heat and the ball bounced the wrong way for the Badgers as they fell behind 39-30. The quarter ended at 42-32 but there was still time to make a run. Unfortunately for Prescott, it was the Panthers who pushed their lead to 53-34 with 5:18 to play.

The Badgers after a timeout went on a 9-0 run fueled by Jimenez and Patterson to get within 53-44 with 2:53 left.

Another three by Jimenez made the score 54-47 with two minutes remaining. Coconino took a timeout and the game shifted back to the Panthers.

Coconino remains unbeaten and improved in the Grand Canyon Region to (9-0) and (17-4) overall.

Prescott slips to (5-3) in the GCR and (9-12) overall. The Badgers will host rival Bradshaw Mountain on Friday at 7:30pm.
