“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” – Calvin Coolidge
With all of the mass shootings, antisemitism, anti-ICE violence and traffic deaths caused by aliens given Commercial Drivers Licenses by blue states, it may be difficult to get into the Christmas spirit this year. What we all need to do is not dwell on the negative news cycles and start thinking about family, friends, the birth of Jesus Christ and the gifts he has bestowed upon us.
There are those who have perpetual scowls on their faces. Apparently, they are unaware that even the ugliest person looks immensely better with a smile, than a frown. A smile is much easier to produce and maintain when we have positive thoughts. As Calvin Coolidge reminded us, Christmas is a state of mind rather than a particular season. However, since Christmas is just a few days away, it is a good time to keep in mind the good things happening around the globe and in this country.
In many parts of the world, freedom seems to be making a comeback. In Latin America, conservatives who love America, and Trump, are being elected to leadership positions. Some countries in Europe seem to be abandoning their suicidal policies of unfettered immigration from Muslim countries. They are starting to realize that the Islamic culture will not assimilate into Europe because it is the antithesis of Western culture and seeks to destroy it.
In our country, logic and reason are gaining advantage over so-called “progressive” ideas. President Trump has shown that more law enforcement on the streets, (whether it is police, National Guard, FBI, ATF, ICE or Border Patrol), reduces crime. Our citizens have seen that blue state laws and policies, like cashless bail, lowering incarceration time, and allowing convicted felons out of prison early, increase crime and greatly impairs the safety of the people.
In recent years there have been more mass shootings, stabbings and incidents of innocent people lit on fire on buses or subways or pushed in front of a trains. More and more people are realizing that this country needs to have a major increase in the number of psychiatric hospitals to house the increasing number of mentally ill people roaming our streets. Some legislators are crafting legislation that will do this and hopefully have mandatory placement for those who are a danger to others.
Unfortunately, this time of year some family members and friends become estranged because of a difference in political views, family issues, or what are considered past insults, injuries or slights. It is rarely worth the pain caused to foul a friendship or cause a division in a family because of a difference of opinion. As Thomas Jefferson said. “It behooves every man who values liberty of conscience for himself, to resist invasions of it in the case of others.” In other words, agree to disagree, but remain close to friends and family.
In the meantime, every December, keep saying “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Hanukkah’, and “Happy New Year.” The rest of the time, keep the spirit of Christmas alive all year by keeping a smile on your face, helping others, and maintaining a positive attitude.
