The Prescott Badgers second half rally came up short in the final minute resulting in a 26-22 loss to the Youngker Roughriders in Buckeye.

Youngker took a 6-0 lead when Larry Moore Jr., swept to the home sideline and went 59 yards for the score. The extra point attempt failed.

The Badgers responded with a 48 yard breakaway run by Jacob Chamberlain. Brady Costes split the uprights for the extra point and Prescott led 7-6.

Chamberlain, who left the game shortly after with an injury, said, “After the touchdown I thought we were going to be good. We have a lot of injuries but we are playing with pride and as hard as we can and you can see that.” About the teams’ power surge in the second half, Chamberlain added, “We just went into the locker room, prayed and just gave it to God. The result is what you saw in the second half.”

The Roughriders went up 12-7 on a Jonas Phillips 26 yard run, and then led 19-7 on a Garcia run before the Badgers threatened again late in the first half.

Prescott eventually had to settle for a Costes field goal after a string of mishaps bogged down the drive in the Youngker red zone.

Trailing 19-10 to start the second half, the Badgers came out with new found energy that translated in a smothering defense. The offense would threaten but had to settle once again on a Costes field goal.

The score was 19-13 when the Badgers defense blasted though the offensive line coming after the Youngker quarterback and bringing him down in the end zone for a safety to cut the deficit to 19-15.  After the initial hit by Rutger Funk, Drew Roberts, Trace Overton, and Easton Shy came in to finish the play.

Despite the Badgers defensive dominance in the third quarter, it was not until the fourth quarter when the Prescott offense finally found the end zone on a 4 yard run by Trace Overton to take a 22-19 lead with 8:36 left in the game.

Youngker responded and found continued life on their drive being awarded pass interference calls on both a third and ten and fourth and ten plays. The Prescott defense could not overcome the calls and the Roughriders scored with just over two minutes to play.

Down by the four, the Badgers needed a touchdown and were in great shape to pull out the win. Prescott had the ball to the Youngker 10 yard line, first and goal with thirty-five seconds left. On the next play a holding penalty moved the ball back at the Youngker 20. Then disaster struck when the pass sailed into the hands of defensive back Tremar Green.

It was a disappointing loss for the Badgers who came so close to picking up the much needed win to still have a shot at the playoffs.

Gunnar Parra said, “The second half we really came together as a team, really strong, but at the end we didn’t get it done. The calls are going to happen, it is part of the game and we just need to be better than that. We have Bradshaw next week and that is going to be a really awesome game and we will have to play a full game against them to come out on top.”

Rutger Funk said, “Frustrating loss for sure. We came together at halftime and basically said no more and came out punching in the second half. I think if we play the whole game like we did the second half tonight we go home with the win, but we can’t have another game like we played in the first half especially against Bradshaw if we want to win.”

Prescott falls to (4-5) and will host the Bradshaw Mountain Bears in what could very well be their season finale. Youngker improved to (7-2).The Badgers will get their shot to upset the Bears on a Thursday night game at Prescott High School.

Bradshaw Mountain led 6-0 after a Jackson touchdown run, then Dallas Hernandez recovered a Panthers fumble at the Coconino 34 yard line, setting up the second score.

Coconino cut their deficit to 14-13 before Bears quarterback Michael Sanford threw a 21 yard touchdown pass to Landon Taggart for a 21-13 lead at the break.

The Panthers tied the game up in the third quarter but it was short lived as Jackson scored on a 38 yard run to get the Bears back on top by seven.

The final twelve minutes the defenses stood tall and that is how it ended.
