Late Inning Rally Comes Up Short: Baseball Roundup

The Prescott Badgers came up short on the road as the Flagstaff Eagles held on to a 7-6 win. The Badgers put up 14 on the scoreboard at home on Tuesday, but were slow to get the offense going.

Flagstaff took a 3-0 lead after four innings, all unearned runs off of starter Travis Gates. The Badgers fielding woes allowed for a total of four unearned runs in the contest.

The Eagles took a 6-0 lead with three more in the fifth inning as Parker Reed came into relieve William Horn to close out the inning.

The Badgers offense was finally able to get something going in the top of the sixth. Ivan Schuster, Nick Martin, and Luke Tobin all scored as Prescott cut the deficit in half 6-3.

Flagstaff managed to get what would turn out to be a big run in the bottom of the sixth, the fourth unearned run of the game for the Eagles.

Trailing 7-3, the Badgers made it as close as you could possibly get. A single, a hit batter, and three consecutive walks with RBIs by Nick Martin and Adrian Sanderford, cut the deficit to 7-5. Still with no outs, a sharply hit ground ball allowed the Eagles to turn a double play as another run would score to make it 7-6. A strikeout ended the game with the game tying run at third.

It was a very tough loss for the Badgers, who going into this game were sitting tied at the top of the Grand Canyon Region with the Bradshaw Mountain Bears.

The latest 4A Division rankings saw the Badgers slip from #4  to #11 with the loss. Flagstaff moved up from #22 to #19.

After a Monday game in Cottonwood versus Mingus, the Badgers return home on Tuesday to face the Bears at 3pm.
