Love Vicki Lawrence – Fear Her Mama: Carol Burnett alumnus brings alter ego to YC for hilarious Two-Woman Show Apr. 25

The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center proudly presents the funniest ‘Take your mother to work day’ you’ll ever see, when Emmy-winning actress/comedienne Vicki Lawrence brings Vickie Lawrence & Mama: A Two-Woman Show to Yavapai College, Friday night April 25, at 7 p.m.

Comedienne Vicki Lawrence is one of the most beloved personalities of television’s Golden Age. Plucked from total obscurity as a high school senior, Vicki went on to become a featured ensemble member of the now-legendary “Carol Burnett Show.” “I went to the Harvard School of Comedy – in front of America,” Vicki says of the experience.

In “Carol Burnett’s” seventh season, Vicki created her most endearing character, Thelma Harper, or “Mama” as she is better known to her fans. Plain-spoken, perpetually cranky and nobody’s fool, Mama became an audience favorite and a focal point of subsequent sketches – a remarkable creation for the 24-year-old actress.

Vicki (and Mama) went on to star in “Mama’s Family,” which consistently topped the ratings for its entire six-year run.

In 2001, following unprecedented ratings for the “Carol Burnett Showstopper Special,” Vicki decided that the time was right to dust off Mama’s sensible shoes and hit the road with her new touring production.

Vicki Lawrence takes the stage first. “My show is not a retrospective,” she explains. “It’s a mixture of stand-up comedy, music and my observations about real life.” Though she is mostly known for her acting and comedic talents, Vicki also earned a gold record for her 1973 hit, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.” She is captivating and amusing, even before Mama gets loose.

“I think people will get a kick out of the things Mama has an opinion about. We’re creating new material with a more modern and cutting edge. Where Mama is concerned, expect the unexpected. There’s really nothing she can’t do,” she says.

“I hope people will be pleasantly surprised by a side of Vicki they may never have seen.…I know they will be looking forward to Mama, and for her part, that crazy old gal will be up to the challenge.”

Tickets for Vicki Lawrence & Mama: A Two-Woman Show start at $49. The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center is located on the Yavapai College Prescott Campus, 1100 E. Sheldon Street, in Prescott.
