Photo: An example of bollards
The City of Prescott and their contractor, Combs Construction Company, will be installing removable bollards in several locations in the downtown area. A bollard is a short, vertical post that is used to safely separate pedestrians from vehicles. Bollards will be installed at select intersections (shown on the map) used for parade routes and special events.
Intersections will be fully closed, 24 hours a day, for bollard installation on these dates (see map above):
Bollard Location 1 and 4:
March 10 through March 18
Bollard Location 2:
March 19 through March 27
Bollard Location 3:
April 14 through April 22
Construction may occur Monday through Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Detour routes will be posted during these closure times. Please follow the marked signage to get to your destination. On-street parking restrictions will be in place during this work. We appreciate your support and understanding as we work to improve Downtown Prescott. Please note, this work is subject to change should unforeseen conditions arise.

Just another waste of our money and nothing else. Lets fix the parking problem. Lets fix the congestion. Lets fix the streets. This is such a waste of time and money!
Thank you very much, City of Prescott.
As an event organizer with over 5,000 people on the street and 1500 young kids I can’t think of a more protective way besides using fire trucks and garbage trucks. The cost for having a private company set up flimsy barricades is sky high and growing every year. This made my day and may save lives.
I absolutely agree with you that this would be a complete waste of money when it could be used for real improvements for the already congested traffic/parking situations etc. Also if it’s for “safety”….I can only imagine how people will react when dealing with the detours of construction.😵💫
Laurence Beal I can’t agree more. I think the problem is very clear and obvious, our money hungry city is cramming to many people into our tiny downtown and of course only so they will spend money and give more to our city to waste.
Have you thought about all of the traffic snarls this is going to cause the businesses in these areas while completely closed for 5 days?? Not only that but the schools??
After recent events in Europe and in the US where madmen plowed into crowds with their vehicles, killing people in droves, I am pleased to see Prescott taking a proactive measure like this.
Cities with Smart People runnning them use the more economical way of blocking vehicle traffic using one or two DOT Dump/Plow Trucks parked in the same spots as the proposed bollards.
Btw, who’s brother, cousin or relative owns the bollard installation company???
There was a time when the solution was orange traffic cones, but let’s agree those days are past in the interest of safety.
Parking large vehicles is a temporary solution, but you need to pay a driver to pick them up, park them, remain on standby in case they need to be moved, and drive them back—likely paying overtime. I don’t begrudge that because you need special skills and a commercial license. Whether for city employees or contractors, money is spent each time across all the events over the years.
Bollards are an investment in capital improvements for the city and are fiscally responsible over the long term. They free up funds to handle congestion and event costs and are a modern solution to a sadly modern risk.
Why these particular four corners is a mystery to me. If someone want to kill a bunch of people then all they have to do it get a running start and drive right into the Square. The four corners of the Square are the most dangerous places! These bollards are just the City’s way of wasting more money – they are good at that you know.
And speaking of accidents and people, Cortez Street needs to be made into only one lane in both directions. Parked cars backing out into moving traffic is very dangerous. I guess changing Cortez Street wouldn’t bring in more money for the City to waste so who cares about safety?
What a complete waste of money! They need to put these ugly big city posts. If they are going to put these things anywhere they should put them on all four corners of the Square, not down on Willis where there aren’t that many pedestrians. I think we need a new city council and a complete new planning and zoning department.
Whoever thought up this really stupid idea? This isn’t Phoenix or Los Angeles, it’s a small town which is quickly disappearing. What a waste of our money and the City’s time. Fix the street problems we have, don’t create more traffic problems. The islands they put in downtown at the intersections has really snarled traffic bad. You want safety, try making Cortez Street just one single lane in each direction. Big trucks parked next to small cars so the cars can’t see to back out and so they do so right into moving traffic. The bricks they put in for crosswalks are all sinking into the ground making driving as bumpy as the streets themselves. Come on people, let stop wasting money because there are a lot of other places you could be spending our money on. I am not real sure who all sees these comments but I think the entire Prescott City Council, the mayor and Planning and Zoning Department needs to read all of the many above comments.
