A Casual Hike Leads to a Snowy Rescue on Granite Mountain – Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office

At around 6:50 pm Thursday, January 16, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team – Backcountry Unit, and deputies responded to a call for lost hikers on Granite Mountain, just outside of Prescott. It was reported that a male in his 70s and a female in her 50s had gotten lost on the way down from the summit. After around 2 hours of searching for the correct trail, and now in darkness, the two hikers realized they were in a dangerous situation. Even with no signal on their cell phones, they were able to call 9-1-1 for help

A YCSO deputy and the SAR team immediately responded to the trailhead. They quickly figured out that the safest way to rescue them at that time was via helicopter. However, due to windy, dark, and snowy conditions, it was unknown if they would have to wait until morning to be rescued.

With help from the YCSO 9-1-1 dispatchers communicating with the hikers, the DPS Ranger was able to locate them. They used a hoist to bring the two up to the Ranger and take them back to safety.

Aside from being very cold, the fortunate hikers were said to be ok.

A huge shoutout to the awesome volunteers of the YCSO Search and Rescue team. YCSO thanks the DPS Ranger for the great work in the sky.

It is very important to know, that even if you have no cell phone service, many phones can still reach 9-1-1 dispatch. Please bring your cell phone, even on what is meant to be, a short hike.
