Romantic Resolutions: There comes a time in every woman’s life, particularly if she’s in a relationship, when her thoughts may turn to marriage. And, let’s be honest, not just marriage, but the actual proposal. Some dates scream ‘marriage proposal’ – Valentine’s Day is a classic choice, but Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve have both gained popularity in recent years; possibly because they involve friends and family, and then they can be there to commemorate this special moment with you, too. New Year’s Eve especially is all about fresh starts, reflection, and celebration.
As we approach the end of the year, DatingNews wanted to find out from 3,000 women in relationships (but not yet married) where their dream proposals would take place on New Year’s Eve 2024 – more specifically, which landmark or location would be the perfect setting for him to get down on one knee? The results can serve as perfect inspiration for men planning to propose this New Year’s Eve!
#1 Prescott Courthouse Plaza
Arizona women overwhelmingly chose Prescott Courthouse Plaza as their top spot for a NYE 2024 marriage proposal. This small-town gem glows with holiday lights, making it as cozy as it is charming. The plaza’s festive yet laid-back vibe feels like the perfect place to share an intimate moment and kick off the new year in style.
#2 Tucson’s Historic Fourth Avenue
The second top pick for a marriage proposal on NYE was Tucson’s Historic Fourth Avenue. Looking for something a little more colorful and lively? Fourth Avenue bursts with creativity and festive energy on New Year’s Eve. Between street performers and vibrant lights, you’ll have a dynamic backdrop for a proposal that’s anything but ordinary.
#3 Tempe Town Lake Pedestrian Bridge
And the third dream proposal spot was Tempe Town Lake Pedestrian Bridge. Modern, sleek, and totally romantic—this bridge is made for couples. The shimmering lake reflections paired with live music and fireworks on New Year’s Eve create the ultimate celebratory vibe. A perfect spot to begin your next chapter together.
Other standout locations for a dream proposal are:
Hawaii women’s number one choice is Waikiki Beach, Honolulu. This would make a fantastic setting for a tropical proposal, with the vibrant energy of Honolulu as a backdrop, while fireworks burst over the Pacific adding color and excitement to the occasion.
South Carolina women dream of being proposed to this year at the Charleston Waterfront Park. Think iconic harbor views, historic charm and a serene ambience; the Park has it all, as well as the stunning Pineapple Fountain, perfect for a post-proposal selfie. Their second choice is the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. The mix of romantic seaside ambience with the lively celebrations and fireworks lighting up the Atlantic make this a memorable spot for a proposal.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, New York women’s most sought after location for a proposal is Times Square on NYE. Definitely not for the shy and retiring types, join in the revelry as you wait for the iconic ball drop for a bold, thrilling, and absolutely unforgettable way to pop the question. Times Square was followed by Albany’s Empire State Plaza. The combination of grand architecture and a serene, reflective pool make this a striking proposal setting, coupled with festive lights and fireworks.
Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, was California’s top pick. A proposal place with the wow factor, here you’ve got the iconic backdrop of the Bay, the incredible structure of the Bridge itself, and the thrill of the NYE fireworks all adding up to a bucket-list-worthy spot.
Over in New Jersey, women here would love to see their man drop to one knee on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. This choice blends coastal charm and city excitement, where you’ll drink in the oceanfront views, festive lights and vibrant holiday celebrations as part of your epic proposal.
Colorado women would choose a natural setting for their big moment. Pikes Peak Avenue, in Colorado Springs, is where natural beauty and mountain views meet city sparkle and illuminations on this vast boulevard. Fireworks light up the night as you prepare to say yes to the ring.
And Florida women would opt for Miami’s tropical vibes, vibrant energy, and jaw-dropping fireworks over Biscayne Bay (in Bayfront Park), in one of America’s craziest cities – a thrilling place to say “I do!” to forever.

DatingNews also asked some further questions about the perfect proposal, and found that overall, Arizona women’s preference for the actual moment of the question being popped would be that it was just her and him, in a private moment, with no one else around (78%). Twenty percent would be happy to have a small group of close friends or family nearby, so they could all join in the celebration afterwards, while a bold 2% would love it to be a grand, public spectacle with a large audience.
The majority (60%) also wanted a classic kneeling down with the ring box for the ring reveal – that’s always how it looks in the movies, after all! 22% are up for a creative surprise, like a scavenger hunt where they don’t know what the prize is, or an elaborate reveal. A further 18% would love to find it hidden in a meaningful object, like a book, or an ice cream sundae.
The perfect moment for the proposal during New Year’s Eve would be just before the clock strikes midnight, according to nearly half (46%) of women. Thirty percent would love it to happen during a shared dinner or event earlier in the night (after all, the question could get lost in the excitement of the bells ringing), while 24% would prefer it to happen early in the evening, then they can spend the rest of the night celebrating.
Over a third (36%) said that the most important element of a New Year’s Eve marriage proposal was the element of surprise – after all, it’s not really fun if you know it’s coming. The speech, or words said by the fiancé-to-be were important to 28%, while 14% said it was the atmosphere and ambience, such as the music and lighting.
The most important accessory or detail which would make the moment extra special would be a meaningful token or memento from the relationship; 41% would really appreciate their partner taking the time to include something that was significant to both of them during the proposal. Twenty-seven percent would love a photographer to capture the moment, while fireworks or sparklers were up there for 22% (a given, surely, on New Year’s Eve!), while 10% would be happy to have a champagne toast afterwards.
‘If you’re going to accept a marriage proposal, why not do it on one of the biggest nights of the year? That way you’ll never forget it!’ says Amber Brooks, senior editor at DatingNews.com.
