Prescott Badgers’ senior Uriah Tenette officially confirmed his choice for continuing his education and sports career in basketball, with the UC San Diego Tritons. The Wednesday morning event was held in the Prescott High School gym amongst his family, coaches, and many friends.

UC San Diego is located in La Jolla, California and was established in 1960. The Tritons play in the Big West Conference. Last season they finished in second place with a (15-5) record behind UC Irvine, and an overall record of (21-12).

Tenette started off by thanking his mom, dad and family for their love and support as he has been able to grow into the person he is today. He also thanked all his coaches for their guidance and support in his years playing sports, along with his friends and teammates in ways of working and growing into better players, and being “family”.

Athletic Director Missy Townsend spoke about how Tenette has impacted the school and those around him. Football coach Cody Collett and basketball coach Travis Stedman both shared what Tenette has meant to them and the sport programs at Prescott High School.

After the signing and numerous photos, Tenette said, “I am super excited being able to do this. It’s a dream come true, and being able to share this moment with my family, friends, teammates and coaches. I have more goals than this. I am just taking them one at a time.” About his choices of schools, “I had Dartmouth and Stanford to consider, but they wanted to me to wait till the spring. I was able to tour the San Diego campus and fell in love with it. Being a California native made it feel right.”

Tenette is currently quarterback on the Badgers football team and led Prescott to its first Grand Canyon Region title since 2012, along with the schools best regular season record in decades at (9-1). “We have a good team and am looking to forward in seeing what we can do in the playoffs. It is all about taking one game at a time. We know there are some very good teams in the bracket, and any number of them could take state.”

Once football season is over, Tenette will hit the hardwood, where he will lead the Badgers on their quest to a state title. The state scoring champ from a year ago that averaged 31.4 points per game, said, “We have a lot of seniors on this team and a tough schedule to help prepare us for our run. We lost to the state champions in playoffs last year and feel we have what it takes this year.”

Last season the Badgers went (21-5) and won the Grand Canyon Region outright going undefeated in region play, and (21-4) the prior year. Last year Tenette led the team with 880 points, 124 assists, 76 steals, and free throws percentage of 86%. In his three years on varsity, Tenette has  scored 1906 points.

First things first though with a big opening round football playoff game versus Vista Grande, on Friday at Prescott High School. Tenette added, “We are ready to go.”
