D-backs Take Final Bow In 2024

The Arizona Diamondbacks played their final six games at home, but losing four out of those six proved costly, and in the end left them on the outside looking in for the post season.

On Sunday, the bats came alive against the San Diego Padres for an 11-2 win. After losing 5-3 on Friday, and getting blanked 5-0 on Saturday, a win on Sunday was a must. Actually, a win on Friday or Saturday would have given the D-backs a good chance to play on. The only other game Arizona won in their final home -stand was an 8-2 win over the Giants on Wednesday.

Manager Torey Lovullo said, “We went out today and did what we needed to do.” About having to wait and see approach. “It sucks, but there is nothing we can do about it. We were in a good position to make the post season for a second straight year, but when you lose two series, four of six, then you have to have to sit and wait to see if things fall in your favor. That is not the way we wanted it to be.”

Corbin Carroll said, “Obviously we would have liked to have controlled our own destiny. We had 89 wins and I think we should view that as positive. The work is done and we have to sit back and see what happens tomorrow.”

Fast forward to today, and the waiting is over see was if either the Mets or Braves would sweep their doubleheader. That was the only way Arizona could have moved on. Both of those teams hold the season tie breakers against the Diamondbacks. Both teams sit at 88-72, and Arizona is done at 89-73.

Well, the Braves and Mets split their doubleheader, sending both teams into the post season. It really was no surprise, yet the worst thing that could have happened for the D-backs. New York rallied and pulled out an 8-7 win in the first game. The second saw the Braves win 3-0.

Last year, the Diamondbacks finished the regular season at 84-78. That was good enough to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Looking back two weeks ago, one would have thought that a second consecutive year in the playoffs was almost certain, but baseball can be a funny game. This year, for the D-backs and their fans, it wasn’t so funny.
