State Route 89 Closed Between Watson Lake and Phippen Roundabout Due to Water Line Break

Closure expected to last two weeks or more due to damage to roadway

A portion of State Route 89 in Prescott is closed following significant damage to the roadway from an underground water line break, between the Watson Lake and Phippen Roundabouts.  Traffic is being diverted to Old SR 89 to go around the damaged roadway, however alternate routes are advised to avoid the area entirely. Repairs are expected to take at least two weeks.

Janet Ramsay, Deputy Director of Public Works, said that drivers should avoid the area if at all possible.  “Repairs will be ongoing for the next two weeks at least, so please avoid the area by using Willow Creek Road via Pioneer Parkway or Willow Lake Road as an alternate,” she said.   “The line is treated effluent, so we reported the leak to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), but we do not expect this partially treated water to be a significant health concern.”

A more extensive closure area may be needed after the crews determine the full extent of the damage to SR 89.  However, the Public Works Department hopes to keep the current detour in place at least through the 4th of July weekend.  More information will be released as it becomes available.

  1. I was caught in the 89 road repairs Monday but was impresses by ADOT’s planning and the detour was easily traveled and short. I would not use 89 in work-travel times for obvious reasons.
Imagine when the work starts on the widening or decking starts through our beautiful Dells.
