The Prescott Badgers blew right past the Mingus Marauders 75-28 in a game where they led from start to finish on senior night. The win, combined with a Flagstaff loss to Coconino, insures the Badger will win the Grand Canyon Region for the first time in 22 years, and only the third time in the last 40.
It was nine zip before the Marauders got their first basket, following a game opening three pointer by senior Andrew Lyon. The other senior, Costa Contreras also started and saw plenty of action. Like Lyon, both players finished with five points.

Contreras said, “It was a fun night, exciting. You only get to play here so many times and I wanted to go out and make an impact and get the W. It was a good senior night.”
Lyon said, “Confidence is huge in this game. I know my teammates trust me to take the right shots. This has been a fun journey crazy how time flies. Started on varsity as a sophomore I was able to learn from the seniors and get some playing time in. As a junior, I got more minutes and was able to make a bigger contribution. Now as a senior I wanted to be that guy the younger players look up to. It’s been fun.”
The Badgers got another big game from Uriah Tenette with 28 points, 8 rebounds, and Zane Gaul with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, in just three quarters of action. Mingus was never in this one as the lead grew to 39-18 at the half.
Both teams came out cold in the third quarter, but it was the Badgers who got the lid off the basket two and a half minutes into the quarter. Prescott outscored Mingus 30-6 in the rest of the quarter for a 69-24 lead. The starters cooled off on the bench as the running clock made the final quarter speed by.
Coach Travis Stedman said, “Both of them have been with the program all four years. Andrew three years varsity, and Costa two. They both started during the Covid year and they were the only two to stick it out. Nobody got cut from those teams either. I am just glad they both stuck it out because they have a huge impact on our team coming off the bench.”
The Badgers are (11-0) in the GCR, and (21-3) overall, remain in the #6 spot in the AIA 4A Division rankings and have a non-region game at Coronado, before returning home for a rescheduled game on Thursday with Flagstaff. Tip time is 7 pm.
