PRESCOTT BADGERS AT LEE WILLIAMS VOLUNTEERS

The Lee Williams Volunteers enjoyed some home cooking on their way to beating the Prescott Badgers 36-33 in Kingman.

The Badgers were victims of three very bad roughing the passer calls, and even worse, the game clock kept running in the final quarter. Sometimes after player ran out of bounds, or even on an incomplete pass. The clock issue was very apparent in the final ten minutes when the Volunteers led by 10.

Prescott trailed early 7-0 when Volunteer’s quarterback Noah Petrauschke hit  Devin White for a 43 yard TD. The Badgers tied the game at seven on a fourth down play when Tenette hit Isaac Muffley for a three yard touchdown. Prescott played error free, while the defense came up with three turnovers. Costa Contreras picked off a pass, but Adam Lloyd’s interception set up the go ahead score. Jaxon Rice connected with Tenette to go up 13-7 in the second quarter.

The Badgers defense held and Prescott then had a touchdown to go up three scores snatched away. Of all the roughing the passer penalties, the biggest one resulted in a 14 point swing. In the second quarter Tenette picked off the pass and ran 60 yards for the score, but a flag that came out for a roughing the passer call when a Badger defender and Volunteer lineman were engaged and both players went into the quarterback. The result of the call after the interception was a Lee Williams first down. The very next play Volunteers quarterback Noah Petrauschke ran 49 yards for a touchdown. Lee Williams led 14-13 at the break.

The Badgers came out flat after a long halftime, opening up the second half with a three and out. The Volunteers pushed the lead to 22-13 when Thomas Doxtader received the punt and ran 67 yards for the score. Petrauschke ran in the two point conversion for a nine point lead.

Prescott came right back with a 65 yard run with Tenette. The two point conversion attempt failed, but the Badgers were within three at 22-19. Lee Williams scored again when Kruz Yocum scored on a nine yard run to bolster the Volunteer lead to 29-19 midway through the third quarter.

Tenette would score on a four yard run, but the two point conversion failed, leaving the score 29-25. Lee Williams responded with their final touchdown when Devin White pulled his second TD reception, this one a 34 yard pass from Petrauschke, to make it 36-25 with 2:37 left. What made things worse for the visitors was the fact that the clock ran when it should not have. Whatever the reason, the officials never did address to correct the clock issues.

Prescott scored with just seven seconds remaining when Muffley caught a five yard pass over the middle from Tenette. A successful two point play as Tenette went up high to catch the pass from Rice, got the Badgers within three. The onside kick was recovered by the Volunteers, who took a final knee to close the game out.

Uriah Tenette led the Badgers ground game averaging 11.8 yards per carry, with 165 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Behind the center, Tenette threw two more touchdowns. Quarterback Jaxon Rice directed most of the air attack going 16-22-0, 127 yards, and one TD. Seven different receivers caught passes, led by Tenette with six. Josiah Peoples had ten tackles. Wyatt Rewerts had three tackles for loss including one sack. Cort Lewis and Isaac Muffley recovered fumbles.

Prescott drops to (0-1), (2-4) will host Flagstaff on Friday for homecoming at 7pm. Lee Williams improved to (1-0), (5-1).

BRADSHAW MOUNTAIN BEARS AT COCONINO PANTHERS

Coconino senior Bridger French rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Panthers in a dominate 41-7 win over the Bradshaw Mountain Bears in Flagstaff.

First year head coach of Coconino Gary Cook had his team ready for the Grand Canyon Region opener after two consecutive road setbacks. It was no surprise that a ground battle took place between the schools, making for a quick game. Coconino threw only six passes, but two went for touchdowns.

The Bears took the opening kickoff and used almost half of the first quarter but were stopped on their initial at the Coconino 30.

The Panthers capped off their opening drive with a four yard run to the corner on a Bridger French touchdown run. French rushed for 65 yards on the Coconino on the first drive.

The Bears fumbled the ball back to Coconino on the ensuing kickoff at the Bradshaw Mountain 21. First play, Colton Buckingham threw a 21 yard TD pass to Noble Young-Blackgoat. The Panthers made it 13-0.

The Panthers scored their third touchdown when French broke through the line and ran 35 yards down the middle of the field to give him 109 yards rushing already in the game. The kick made it 20-0 with nine minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Unfortunately for the Bears, a short punt gave Coconino the ball at the Bradshaw Mountain 27. The Panthers picked up a touchdown on a break when Noble Young-Blackgoat created his own space, then making the catch to push the lead to 27-0 with four minutes left in the first half.

The Bears were moving the ball but another fumble gave the Panthers the ball at the BM 43 with 2:17 left. Bradshaw Mountain stopped Coconino to close out the half.

Coconino did not miss a beat coming out in the second half. An opening drive finished off by a 16 yard run by Bridger French pushed the lead to 34-0 with nine minutes left in the third. Four minutes later, Buckingham called his own number for a one yard run to push the lead to 41-0.

The Bears were able to get on the board when Bruce Normandin pass was pulled in by Kylin Jackson. Trevor Head stayed perfect on the season, 18-18, to make the score 41-7 with 8:55 remaining.

On a positive note for Bradshaw Mountain (0-1), (4-2), Gabriel Ricketts rushed for 81 yards to become the third all time leading rusher in Bradshaw Mountain history with 2743 total yards. The Bears will have to wait till next week to try and win the schools 250th game when they host Mingus for homecoming, Friday at 7pm. Coconino will travel to Lee Williams.
