Prescott at La Joya Community

Jaxon Rice threw for 265 yards and four touchdowns as the senior quarterback led the Badgers to a 39-0 win over the La Joya Community Lobos during 100* temperatures in Avondale.

Prescott graduated almost all their starters from a (9-3) team a year ago, and the new squad had an impressive first outing. The Badgers started the season on defense, and held the Lobos to a three and out.

The offense came out and pulled a double 29,  moving the ball from their own 29 to the Lobos 29, before turning the ball over on downs.

A second consecutive defensive stop was highlighted when Adam Lloyd came off the edge for a big sack on La Joya quarterback Aaron Winfield for a hug loss, forcing another Lobos punt.

On the Badgers second possession, Rice aired it out to Johann Gundermann, as the receiver ran under the 61 yard pass in stride for the first touchdown of the season. Gundermann ran in the two point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Prescott doubled their lead to 16-0 when a Rice swing pass to Tenette went for a 50 yard score. Rice went under center to run in the two point conversion with just over ten minutes left in the first half.

Gundermann caught his second TD pass doing a tightrope act in the end zone. The junior receiver finished with seven catches for 154 yards. Rice ran in the two point conversion again for a 24-0 lead.

After another La Joya offensive stop by the dominate Badger “D”, the offense closed out the first half with Rice’s fourth TD pass, this one to Isaac Muffley.

The Badgers closed out the scoring in the third quarter on the ground when Adam Lloyd got a big block from Tyson Gillette off tackle to score from four yards out. Jed Rummage kicked the extra point.

It was a good start for Prescott, whose offense racked up 428 yards, 291 through the air, and a 137 on the ground. The defense held La Joya Community to less than 100 yards, and more importantly kept the Lobos out of the end zone.

Prescott (1-0) will host Thunderbird (1-0) on Friday at 7 pm.

Bradshaw Mountain took the lead on a tough two yard run by Jordan Kelley. The Lobos, lost in the 4A championship to the departed ALA-Gilbert North last season, tied the game when Jett McCray went off tackle from three yards out.

The Bears took a 9-7 lead in the final minute of the second quarter thanks to a high snap over the Snowflake punter. The ball went all the way into the end zone as the punter raced to fall on it ahead of the Bradshaw Mountain defense.

An opening drive score to start the third quarter increased lead to 16-7 when Ricketts battled to cross the goal line from a yard out. Snowflake came right back on a seven play 73 yard drive, ending when Bryant connected with Colton Tidwell on an 8 yard scoring strike.

Bradshaw Mountain put the game away when Ricketts powered his way for the touchdown from four yards out. Bruce Normandin ran in the two point conversion for a ten point advantage. A pair of interceptions thrown by Bryant to the Bears closed out the game. The Snowflake quarterback was 19-33-2, 196 yards, and a touchdown. Bryant also led the team in rushing with 29 yards. Six different receivers caught passes, with Merrick Ulberg 7-61, and Payton Papa 6-73, leading the way.

The Bears (1-0), will have even a tougher challenge next week as they host 4A favorite Canyon Del Oro (1-0). Game time is 7pm.
