Lawlessness Results in Vigilantism – Buz Blog

Sometimes justice is better served by those who have experienced the pain”
― Mark W Boyer

Every day and night, on some cable news networks and internet sites, we see the chaos in the Democrat run cities. Innocent people are being beaten, robbed, injured and killed by psychotic predators. Hordes of hooded and masked thieves are looting businesses on an almost daily basis. With the plethora of camera phones these blatant crimes are all too well documented.

Laws passed by the voters, under the guise of “judicial reform” or police reform, have taken away the requirement of arrested criminal suspects to post cash bail. These so-called reforms have also lowered many former felonies to misdemeanors. The result is the revolving door of injustice, where criminals are arrested and out the front door of the police station before the arresting officers have filed their reports.

History often repeats itself, usually when the populous fails to learn the lessons that it teaches. The best example is San Francisco in the 1850s. There were two vigilance committees that organized as the result of rampant crime and political corruption. A look at that diseased city today is a confirmation that history, does indeed, repeat itself.

The Committee of Vigilance in 1851, executed four men, deported a couple and physically punished others. The Committee claimed to have over 700 members and was formed by citizens who saw crime running rampant, gang organized theft and arson. Prisoners were being released as a result of dishonest politicians, police and what they felt was a corrupt “due process” system.

In 1856, many of the leaders of the earlier group formed another Committee of Vigilance. This organization claimed to have 6000 members. In addition to crime, the focus in 1856 was political corruption based, on what many thought was election fraud in a city election. That led to the murder of a newspaper editor. The Committee in 1856, also executed four prisoners and another prisoner in their custody killed himself.

The point is that the people are generally reluctant to take the law into their own hands, but there comes a point when they feel that there is no other alternative. When the elected officials fail to respond to rampant crime, when police are corrupt or emasculated to the point of ineffectiveness, when prosecutors and courts subvert justice, in the name of “social justice”, decent, law abiding folk come to their wits end. They have to make choices. What decisions will the citizens of San Francisco, LA, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland and other woke cities make?

It seems unlikely that in today’s America, new vigilante committees would form, but it is a possibility, however slight. Some groups may form, learning from the groups looters and Antifa rioters. They will be clad in hoodies and masks. They will arm themselves with bats, clubs and possibly more deadly weapons and they will confront those who shoplift, loot and/or riot and break other laws.

In another scenario, small businesses in a particular area, may gather their monetary resources and pay for Mafia style “protection”. Anyone shoplifting, looting, or vandalizing in those areas will be dealt with by hired thugs who will leave them laying or limping away with broken arms, legs and heads. These hired protectors will then melt away before local law enforcement officers arrive.

These are the worst case situations. In the best case, an enraged electorate will educate themselves and will finally vote out the rascals, change social justice laws and defund the police agendas. Whatever happens, the current situation won’t continue much longer. American’s patience is starting to wear too thin.

  1. Hey Buz!

Have you ever seen the film, “The Oxbow Incident” with Henry Fonda? It explores vigilantism as well, and I was very glad that Mr. Mosher showed it to us in the 7th grade.

    1. Richard Williams

Jimmy, I not only saw the movie, I read the book. vigilantism can certainly go wrong. However there are some occasions when there is no other choice, like in San Francisco in the 1850s.
