Uriah Tenette scored 22 and Zane Gaul had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Prescott Badgers to a 77-43 win over the Cortez Colts in the Badger Dome.
The Badgers improved to (2-0), but are still getting the team in working order. Coach Travis Stedman said, “We have not had a full team practice yet. Uriah and Jake just got done with football, and put on a basketball uniform and started playing. “
Prescott jumped on top, never trailing in the game, leading by as much as 30. Zane Gaul was a dominate force inside from the beginning, causing some shot adjustments by the Colts, that resulted in very little success. Uriah Tenette and Jake Hilton popped in a three pointer each, with Tenette knocking down a basket at the first quarter buzzer and a 19-13 Badger lead.
Cortez (2-4), made a mini run to pull within 22-19 with five minutes left in the half. Andy Saeva led the Colts with 10 points in the quarter, 18 for the game. After that, it was pretty much all Badgers.
Micah Buettner scored six in the second quarter, and was on the receiving end of a pair of sharp pass assists from Rome Bassett, who scored in each quarter, finishing the game with eight points off the bench. The Badgers increased their lead to 32-21 at the half.
The second half saw the Badgers more than double up the Colts on the scoreboard as they used their energy to beat Cortez to the ball and crashing the boards. The third quarter saw the Prescott lead grow to 53-34 as Tenette and Gaul had another big quarter.

The Badgers finished off Cortez as everyone got some minutes, with seven different players scoring on the final eight minutes. Tenette, who followed up his 40 point opener with 22 points, 7 assists, and 6 steals said, “We came out and played hard and had some fun. We did our job tonight. Coach told us to have some discipline on defense, get some stops, and that leads the offense.“ On the transition from football to basketball in a week, Tenette added, “I have been doing this for years now and I just flip the switch, and I am ready.” Jake Hilton, also coming off a good football season, had a similar take. “You know you have to get into a little different mindset, but the goals are ultimately the same,” said Hilton. “It’s great to be home. It was good to get everybody involved in the game. We have our crowd, and it’s fun to play in front of them, and get the win.” Off the bench, Rome Bassett had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Ben Dutson added 6. Stedman added, “This team is just getting started, and looking forward to see what we can do once everyone is in shape.”
Prescott will travel to Tempe to face Marcos de Niza tonight at 7 pm.
