Jason Parent scored 30 points to lead the Badgers in a 72-59 home opening win over the Seton Catholic Sentinels.
After starting the season (3-2) on the road, Prescott was happy to return home to play in front of their fans. “It’s always good to get back home, and a lot of fun to play in front of our student section. We feel it gives us an edge,” said Jason Parent. “The new players are buying into the system that coach has put together, and our chemistry will continue to grow.”
Seton Catholic came out and opened up a 5-2 lead, but the Badgers settled in, taking the lead on a jump shot by Parent with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Jackson Adlhoch drilled his second of nine three pointers to give the Sentinels a 8-6 lead. The two teams exchanged baskets until Logan Jex hit a three pointer to give Prescott a 17-14 lead with 1:10 on the opening quarter clock. The Badgers never trailed after that, but it did get close..
The Prescott lead grew to eight, 28-20 on a follow up basket by Jason Parent with 4:00 left in the half, prompting the Sentinel coach Raymond Patche to call timeout.
An additional basket by Zane Gaul pushed it to 30-20, but a 9-3 run by the Sentinels cut the Badger lead to 33-29 at the half.
Prescott came out and pushed the lead back up to twelve, at 47-35 midway through the third quarter, on key baskets by Gaul and Logan Jex. The largest lead of the game came after back-to-back buckets by Parent, pushing the score to 51-35 with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter. A mini run by the Sentinels closed the gap to 53-40 at the end of the third quarter.
Parent, out of a Badger timeout, boosted the lead and the crowd with a slam dunk, 57-42 midway through the quarter. The Sentinels managed to cut the deficit to ten at 65-55, with 1:28 to play, but that was as close as they would get.
Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, “It is nice to be home and to get the win, but I felt we lacked some intensity in parts of the game, that kept Seton Catholic in it. Our goal is to shut the other team down to one single digit quarter in scoring, and we did not do that tonight. We need to guard better. I thought Jason and Zane played very well. We are working on getting the pieces put together, because we are still not at full strength, missing Jake Hilton, but a win is a win”
Jason Parent also had 13 rebounds and 5 assists, to go along with his 30 points. Freshman Zane Gaul had 10 points and 6 rebounds, and Jonas Carman had 9 points and 8 rebounds.
Seton Catholic falls to (1-5), while the (4-2) Badgers pay a visit to Bradshaw Mountain tomorrow night, at 7 pm, in an early Grand Canyon Region showdown.
