Little Bright Eyes Premiers at The Hazeltine September 24 – 27

Little Bright Eyes follows three, intertwining tales about longing that span time and space.

First we meet Venetia, a woman so weighed down by grief that she feels she is unable to move from her late husband’s desk. In an effort to keep herself near him, in the only way she can, she decides to write a story.

Next, we meet Clyde, a hard working and resourceful farm boy who, despite his lack of a formal education, has somehow found himself accepting a job far away from home, at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ.

Lastly, we meet the subject of Venetia’s story, Pluto. Pluto exists so far away from the light of the sun that she wonders if anyone will ever really see her…

This play is a tender and romantic exploration of the gravities that bring everything in the universe together, and wonders if we are ever, really, truly, alone.

“I’m calling it a romance because that’s the general tone” says Valerye Rene, winner of the 2026 24 Hour Play Popular Choice Award. “I didn’t add a lot of razzle dazzle…I think the true events really are that romantic”. Rene’s love of community (and her love of love) shines through in the performance.

Raised in Prescott Valley, she moved to Denver for a stint before moving back to Prescott. “I don’t know if I could have done [this play] anywhere else because of how phenomenal the community is here. It’s a love story to the community, and the community that supported Clyde at Lowell. And it’s a love story to all of us too, and where we live.”
