Handelman Bests Lincoln in OT…as Jones Rolls On

The Mile Hi Horseshoe Club hosted another highly contested tournament on a beautiful day at Watson Lake with the overall tournament champion being determined in overtime.

The decision was made for the champion to be determined by just four shoes. Hal Handelman needed a down and back to beat Trisha Lincoln to win the Pitchers Without Catchers Horseshoe Tournament.

Lincoln said, “Well, I will never do that again. It will be a full game from now on.” Hal, on the other hand, thought that it worked out great. “Started off when she didn’t get anything and I got a ringer plus one. So on the way back I got a ringer and it was over.”

The two had split their earlier games as Handelman beat Lincoln 59-38 in the first game but Lincoln rebounded to win 56-46 in the finale to send it to OT. Cody Williams finished third. In the two closest games, Trisha was able to get past Cody 46-41 and 47-43. Everyone pitched below their average with Handelman adding, “Guess the perfect weather screwed us up.”

Larry Jones won his third straight Class B at Prescott by going (5-1) on the day. Jones’ only loss came in his first game against newcomer Mike Andres, who had a 34% average coming into Saturday. Bryant Smith Jr. rounded out the top three finishing third.

A winner of four in a row now, Jones said, “I have been fortunate just to squeak by. Several of those games have been by one or two points. I just keep trying to find ways to improve.”

Prescott Valley will host a tournament this Saturday at 8am at American Legion Park on Bob Drive.
