Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority Earns “Gold Helmet” Status for Leadership in Firefighter Cancer Prevention

The Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) has been recognized with “Gold Helmet” status through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer, a national initiative aimed at better understanding and reducing cancer risks among firefighters.

This distinction is awarded to fire departments that demonstrate exceptional commitment to firefighter health by enrolling at least 50% of their active personnel, or more than 300 firefighters, into the registry. CAFMA’s achievement reflects a department-wide effort to go above and beyond in protecting its workforce from one of the profession’s greatest threats.

Occupational cancer remains the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service. According to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), nearly 80% of its member line-of-duty deaths in 2025 were attributed to occupational cancer.

“Earning Gold Helmet status is a direct reflection of our firefighters’ commitment to their long-term health and the culture we’ve built around cancer prevention,” said Brody Fields, CAFMA Health and Safety Officer. “Participating in the National Firefighter Registry ensures that we are contributing to critical research that will benefit not only our personnel, but firefighters across the country.”

CAFMA’s Gold Helmet recognition complements a comprehensive approach to cancer mitigation already in place throughout the organization. These efforts include:

  • Clean gear protocols to reduce exposure to carcinogens and toxins
  • On-scene decontamination procedures following fire incidents
  • Ongoing health monitoring for personnel
  • Free, comprehensive full-body cancer screenings provided through Vincere Cancer Center, supported by grant funding

Fire Chief John Feddema added, “This recognition isn’t just about participation, it’s about taking responsibility for our people. We know the risks firefighters face don’t end when the fire is out. By supporting the National Firefighter Registry and investing in strong cancer prevention practices, we’re working to protect our firefighters for the long haul.”

The NIOSH National Firefighter Registry for Cancer is the largest effort of its kind, designed to track and analyze cancer trends in the fire service. By participating, CAFMA firefighters are helping to advance research that will lead to improved safety standards, prevention strategies, and ultimately, lives saved.

CAFMA remains committed to prioritizing firefighter health, safety, and longevity, both on and off the fireground.
