On Saturday, March 14, the Hazeltine Theater presents an evening of jazz guitar featuring Howard Alden and Greg Ruby, two musicians connected by a long shared history and deep commitment to the jazz tradition. The two first met in 2004, when Ruby was touring with Pearl Django and Alden sat in with the group. A lasting friendship and mentorship developed, with Ruby traveling regularly to New York City to study with Alden. Over the years, they have performed together at festivals and venues including DjangoFest Northwest, DjangoFest San Francisco, Jazz Alley, and the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee.
Howard Alden brings decades of experience as a leading jazz guitarist, recording extensively and contributing the guitar soundtrack to Sweet and Lowdown, a film closely associated with the early-2000s resurgence of interest in Django Reinhardt. Greg Ruby is known for his work as a swing dance bandleader, composer, recording artist, and educator, with a career rooted in swing-era jazz and original compositions. Their performance highlights a long-standing collaboration through an intimate guitar dialogue grounded in melody, harmony, and improvisation.
