Dignity Health YRMC Advises Fall Prevention in Wintry Conditions

It’s no secret that January is typically one of the wetter months in Yavapai County. With all the extra moisture, comes the potential for painful slips and falls on the ice and snow. That’s why one physician with Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center is sharing the best ways to stay safe while out and about this winter.

“For starters, don’t go out in the snow unless you absolutely have to. If you have to go out, wearing non-slip shoes or shoes with good traction will greatly reduce your chances of having a fall. However, the right footwear is only half the battle,” said YRMC Occupational Medicine specialist Martti Kahkonen, MD. “To maintain your balance, it is recommended that you take short, flat-footed steps.”

Dr. Kahkonen also advises to be attentive of your surroundings by avoiding your phone and keeping your gaze forward to spot any potential hazards, and giving yourself sufficient time for travel.

“Rushing is a big contributing factor to preventable falls,” says Dr. Kahkonen. “It’s better to leave a little early so you can take your time and not end up hurt, on crutches, or even on bedrest.”

In the event that you do have a fall, keep an eye on your symptoms. If you have dizziness, a headache, difficulty breathing,  bleeding, are unable to move the injured part of your body or put any weight on it, go to the emergency room or call 911.

“Use your judgement, if your discomfort from a fall doesn’t go away quickly, don’t hesitate to see your family provider for any continuing symptoms,” Dr. Kahkonen adds.

“We can order tests and imaging, or refer you to a specialist if needed,” explains Dr. Kahkonen. “We would rather have you come in right away just as a precaution, than wait until it gets worse.”

According to the latest data from the Arizona Department of Health Services, there were more than 3,600 falls per 100,000 people in Yavapai County in 2024.
