Folk music artist Mark Matos will give a presentation on Fri., Oct. 24 at the Yavapai College Prescott Art Gallery (inside the Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center, 1100 E. Sheldon St.) from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Mark will be giving a presentation, “The Sound of American Folk Art,” centered on the historical role of DIY music within the broader context of American folk art; commercial art versus folk art as cultural influence; the implications of AI and its effect on the living traditions that make up the landscape of American folk art, and American culture more broadly.

The short talk will be followed by an abridged live performance of Matos’ one-man folk opera, “America: Lost & Found.”

Mark Matos has been a fixture in the American underground music scene for nearly three decades; releasing a dozen critically acclaimed albums of original material, producing a #1 Mojo Magazine album of the month, and composing the soundtrack for James Franco’s “I Think You Are Totally Wrong: A Quarrel.”

He has collaborated with Nathaniel Rateliff, as well as members of Patti Smith’s band, Deerhoof; Tom Waits’ band, Steve Mackay of Iggy & the Stooges, Dead Meadow, Victoria Williams and many others. He teaches classes on American DIY culture and American Folk Music at the Mountain Oak Community School in Prescott. He is also the founder of the Autonomous Music Preservation Society (A.M.P.S.).
